Green Key is a leading international eco-label, currently existing in more than 40 countries. The certification is supported by the World Tourism Organisation as well as the UN environment programme, UNEP. Since 1989, the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group in EMEA has actively worked to reduce its impact on the climate and the environment. The hotels already have the Nordic Swan eco-label, and the new international certification recognizes the efforts on a global level. Hotels in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland will get certified in January. Finland will follow in the second quarter of 2015.
“Carlson Rezidor is the leading international hotel group in the Nordics. It is important that we remain at the forefront and take responsibility for issues related to sustainability and the environment in all aspects of our business. The Green Key certification is a proof that our work is being recognised on an international level”, said Thomas Engelhart, Area Vice President Nordics of Rezidor.
To achieve the Green Key certification, a hotel must work actively to minimise its environmental impact and fulfil a number of criteria in environmental management, guest information, water stewardship, waste management and chemical consumption reduction. The focus must also be on promoting the use of local and organically grown vegetables and food products.
A large number of Carlson Rezidor hotels in Germany, France, the Baltics and the Netherlands have already been awarded with the Green Key. Finn Bolding Thomsen, International Green Key Director said: “It is a pleasure for us to see that the cooperation agreement between Carlson Rezidor and Green Key International now also includes the Green Key award for majority of the group’s hotels in the Nordics. We are especially happy that the cooperation has led to the first Green Key awarded establishments in Norway and Iceland.”
Signalling the commitment to guest’ safety and security, and well-being, in December last year Carlson Rezidor became the first international hotel chain to sign an agreement with Safehotels Alliance, a globally renowned consultancy company in security. In addition, the international think tank Ethisphere has awarded Carlson Rezidor as one of the world’s most ethical companies since 2010.
