Quinta da Marinha, located in Cascais near Lisbon, has recently reopened following an extensive restyling which has seen improvements in a number of key areas in the resort. The reception has been redesigned, while the guest rooms have new beds and bed linens. The two restaurants, Rocca and Five Pines, have also been reworked – Rocca sporting a traditional Portuguese blue, and Five Pines blending contemporary design with antiques. João Pinto Coelho, commercial director for the hotel’s owner Onyria Golf Resorts, said: “Our main focus was to enhance customer comfort throughout, whether it was just a simple case of redecoration, modification or complete overhaul. We wanted to become more contemporary and decided to increase the amount of open space so our guests could feel even more at home.” The resort is an ideal venue to do business, play golf or enjoy all Portugal has to offer. Facilities include numerous swimming pools, tennis courts, restaurants, 11 meeting rooms and a health club.

Royal Garden Villas & Spa honoured in the 2014 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards Tenerife’s Royal Garden Villas & Spa has been named among the winners in the Spain Luxury Category in the 2014 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards. One reviewer named it “The best hotel I’ve ever stayed in!” The resort comprises 28 luxurious standalone villas, each with their own private pool, a restaurant and bar, and a spa, among other facilities. Guests are guaranteed total privacy, yet there are plenty of activities to enjoy, including golf at one of the many nearby courses.

Ottoman Hotel Imperial wins award for cuisine

The Istanbul Chamber of Tourist Guide Awards (formerly the Traditional TUREB Awards) has recognised Ottoman Palace Hotel as serving the Best Authentic Cuisine in its Matbah restaurant. The ICoG awards have been held since 2003 and are chosen by around 4500 tourist guides in the city. Necati Yilmaz, manager of the restaurant, commented: “We are so happy to learn that we have won this prestigious award, which is based on the distinguished and impartial evaluation of professional tourist guides – the real workers of the Turkish tourism industry. We thank all those staff who made contribution to this special recognition!”

Stargazing at Hotel Ranga

Iceland’s acclaimed Hotel Ranga has announced another unique addition to its list of facilities – an astronomical observatory. The roll-off roof observatory houses two state-of-the-art 11-inch computerised telescopes (making it the most advanced observatory in Iceland) and capacity for 30 people. By night the telescopes can be used to view Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and Mars – and even Uranus and Neptune. During the day they are turned to the sun, where occasionally plasma clouds can be seen – often an indicator that the northern lights will be viewable above Hotel Ranga two or three days later. The observatory is free for guests of the hotel. Ranga’s own stargazing expert, Saevar Helgi, gives lectures for groups.

Discover Ljubljana with Antiq Hotel

Lonely Planet recently voted Ljubljana second place in their Best in Europe 2014 list (just pipped to the top spot by summer holiday favourite Greece). Voters cited its ‘vibrant cultural, café and nightlife scene that gives it the feel of a perpetual street party.’ According to Lonely Planet, the celebrations for the 2000th anniversary of the Roman city of Emona (where Ljubjlana now stands) make it the most exciting place to visit in August. The boutique Antiq Hotel is located on a quiet pedestrianised street, and will be offering Emona celebration packages and itineraries to visitors wanting to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Celebrity chefs return to Capital Hotel

Capital Hotel in London is launching Return to the Capital– a unique series of special evenings that will further strengthen the hotel’s reputation for culinary excellence. The hotel has invited celebrated chefs to take over the Michelin-starred restaurant, Outlaw’s at the Capital, for an evening, allowing guests the chance to dine around the country without leaving the hotel. The hotel’s restaurant, Outlaw’s at The Capital, which opened in October 2012, is chef Nathan Outlaw’s first restaurant outside Cornwall, and was awarded its first Michelin star in 2013. It has also won the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2014 award for ‘Best Value Set Lunch’.

On September 17, Outlaw’s at The Capital will host an evening with Glynn Purnell to celebrate the launch of his first book, ‘Cracking Yolks & Pig Tales’. Purnell’s restaurant in Birmingham was awarded its first Michelin star in 2009, and he was recently featured on TV’s Great British Menu.

On October 8 Tom Kerridge will cook for just 34 diners at the hotel. TV chef Kerridge is now chef/owner of the celebrated Hand & Flowers in Marlow – the first pub to win two Michelin stars, amongst many other awards.

Each four-course meal will cost £160 per person including wine pairings, aperitif and canapés on arrival.
