Situated at Number 2 on Claude Nobs Avenue, this new project is the result of a unique history. Since its very beginnings, the Festival has been entwined with Fairmont Le Montreux Palace. In this elegant jewel of the highest architectural traditions, constructed in 1906, the Festival’s artists have always found a rare kind of tranquility that is the soul of Swiss hospitality. These artists, like Vladimir Nabokov, have been inspired by the breath-taking beauty of the Swiss Riviera. B.B. King, James Brown, David Bowie, Miles Davis, Roberta Flack, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Joe Cocker, Santana, Grace Jones… their names still echo in the corridors, between early-morning vocals from Randy Crawford, Prince’s scales on the lobby piano, and even Quincy Jones’ late-night snacks of spicy chicken. On the top floor, the Claude Nobs Suite, the Freddy Mercury Suite, and the Quincy Jones Suite are once again ready to offer well-deserved rest to a number of master performers. The Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, steeped in Festival history and lore, was the perfect place for the newest Montreux Jazz Café in Switzerland, designed to evoke the warmth of Claude Nobs’ famous chalet.

The Montreux Jazz Cafés launched by Montreux Jazz International SA are veritable ambassadors of the Fes- tival’s spirit around the globe. After Geneva, Zurich, London, and Paris Gare de Lyon, this 5th Café (and the first with its own storefront) will be an establishment clearly stamped with the style of the Festival’s founder: lots of wood, and a color palette featuring chocolate, red, and purple, will produce a fusion of cozy jazz clubs and the chalet esthetic. The walls will be decorated with objects from Claude’s private collection, audiovisual archive footage, and black and white photos that immortalize memories from a half-century of world-class concerts. This Claude Nobs style Montreux Jazz Café will become a landmark destination for anyone wishing to get a taste of the Montreux Jazz Festival experience, and to dive into the Festival’s history, all year round.

Work will begin on May 12th for a two-stage opening: on June 26th the public will already be able to enjoy the Montreux Jazz Café and Lounge (currently the restaurant La Brasserie of Fairmont Le Montreux Palace) spaces, with Funky Claude’s Bar replacing what is now Harry’s New York Bar in September. Funky Claude’s Bar will offer an intimate jazz performance venue that will be open year round. Until then, no doubt many a music lover will sit down at a new table and enjoy an Ella’s cheesecake or a BB Burger while waiting to see one of the big-name performers of the 48th edition happen by, drawn by Montreux’s inimitable charm…
