“We wanted to reanimate the heart of this village with something distinct, contemporary and luxurious that fit within the existing quaint scape of Andermatt and met strict environmental standards,” said Jean Michel Gathy, architect and principal with the renowned Denniston International Architects, which also developed the master plan for the new Andermatt Swiss Alps project and is also famous for their works for Aman resorts, One & Only, St. Regis and so on. “The design completely anticipates the needs of today’s luxury traveler, with innovative furnishings, natural materials and thoughtful amenities that are familiar and comfortable, yet luxurious and modern.”

Centrally located on the site of the historic Bellevue Hotel – the original, century-old grande dame of Andermatt Village – The Chedi Andermatt is the centerpiece of the new Andermatt Swiss Alps development. Scheduled to open in December, 2013, the resort comprises 50 luxury hotel rooms and 119 impeccably appointed residences as well as two gourmet restaurants, luxurious lounges and bars, and exclusive facilities including a spa, indoor heated swimming pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The meticulously designed resort will offer discerning travellers highly personalized services and facilities with a design that is contemporary, elegant and pays homage to the treasured traditions of Swiss mountain chalets.

The Chedi Andermatt combines traditional alpine elegance with innovative and sumptuous modern architecture and interior design. The resort and surrounding development are sustainably designed and developed to meet MINERGIE Swiss quality and standards which reduce energy consumption of the property.

Setting a New Standard for Mountain Luxury

The hotel and residences’ ambiance is elegantly casual, enhanced by traditional features and materials which evoke the classic Swiss architecture that has defined these mountain regions. The architecture features rich, timber-clad exteriors, pitched shale rooflines and hearty stone accents that blend effortlessly with the beautiful serenity of the surrounding village and Urseren Valley. These features are accented by the generous placement of glass throughout the hotel’s buildings, including private terraces with glass indoor/outdoor fireplaces which animate and lighten the façade, creating a more modern look.

The entry to The Chedi Andermatt is a stunning glass box rather than a traditional overhanging port cochere. Glorifying the guests’ arrival, the box is naturally lit with the sun and sky, creating a covered, yet light and lively entrance and setting the stage for a modern experience within. Stepping inside, guests will immediately notice a different kind of reception with a stunning 90-foot split granite bar. The bar doubles as an inviting place to check in as well as chat with other guests, order drinks and find out about the events around town. Beautifully ornate etched glass at the bar, heavy green velvet curtains and an old-fashioned sofa are affectionate nods to the original 1904 landmark hotel that stood at this site.

In a departure from the typical lobby, The Chedi Andermatt features a rustically modern lounge area with rich wood accents, warm colors and a welcoming central fireplace surrounded by plush contemporary daybeds and large game tables. The lounge has a view to the south of the large sun-filled outdoor courtyard. The perfect place for lounging during sunny weather, the open-air courtyard features a massive stone fireplace surrounded by benches. Just at the edge of the courtyard is the Apres Ski cigar and wine lounge, appointed with comfortable seating, a fully-stocked wine bar, a large modern fireplace and massive windows with sweeping views.

Just like the entry, the heated swimming pool is enclosed in triple-paned glass with bright, sunny southern exposure. The pool is surrounded by a deck crafted from large planks of re-used teakwood with fireplaces and chaises strategically placed to create eight private lounge areas around the pool.

Chic Mountain Living

The one- and two-bedroom guestrooms and residences range in size from 110 – 306 square meters and are marked with a contemporary design that is accentuated by traditional alpine materials and elements. Meticulously appointed to anticipate the needs of guests, each guest room and suite features a private entry foyer with closets and cabinets for coats, boots and bags. Once inside, the room features a gorgeous, glass-encased double-sided fireplace that opens to both the inside living area and outdoor balcony. In a contemporary nod to classic Swiss chalet architecture, the outdoor balconies have modern balustrades that are created with tempered glass. This chic touch creates unexpected views of the gorgeous Alpine scenery and lightens up the room. To allow guests to further enjoy the fireplace and views, the luxurious bathtub area is set behind movable screens which, when open, allow for guests to enjoy the scenery while bathing.

The guest room décor is anchored by warm, neutral colors with splashes of rich accents. In an additional nod to classic Swiss design, each room features a 4.5-meter canvas mural printed with a monochromatic 17th century Paul Rubens baroque painting. Behind the bed, a timber-clad wall features antique lanterns to give the feeling of a starry night’s sky. Custom-designed furniture allows for adjustable living, such as an extra-wide burgundy leather couch that easily accommodates two children or adults.

The Andermatt Swiss Alps – A New Development Rich in Tradition

Located in the Gotthard Region of Switzerland in the high Alpine valley of Urseren, Andermatt has been a favorite European holiday destination for over a century. At 1,444 meters above sea level in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Andermatt is known for high peaks, deep canyons, wild waterfalls and quiet mountain lakes. Four major rivers originate in the region – the Rhine, Rhone, Reuss, and Ticino – and the area enjoys some of the finest air and water quality in the world.

This pristine valley is home to the new Andermatt Swiss Alps, designed by Denniston International as an integrated year-round holiday destination resort with four and five-star hotels, residences and luxury chalets as well as a retail village, conference facilities, a sports center with tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool, and an 18-hole championship golf course. Construction is well underway on all aspects of the project with expected completion over the next 10 years.

The Andermatt Swiss Alps will also modernize the Andermatt ski facilities, including the Gemsstock for experienced skiers and the Natschen for families and novices, and connect Andermatt ski area with neighbouring Sedrun. Combined, the new ski arena will offer 130 kilometers of well-developed piste.

Unprecedented Opportunity & Value

The Chedi Andermatt is uniquely suited for discerning Asian buyers seeking a second home in one of Europe’s most sought-after locales.

The diverse property portfolio includes 64 elegant hotel residences, 42 apartment residences, thirteen lavish penthouses featuring indoor-outdoor fireplaces and spectacular views of the Urseren Valley and nearby peaks. The fully furnished one- and two-bedroom residences range in size from 110 to 306 square meters, and the lofts and penthouses range from 221 to 655 square meters.

Owners will enjoy all the amenities of adjoining hotel, which include The Spa at The Chedi Andermatt, a wellness center with state-of-the-art fitness facilities and programs as well as a comprehensive range of health and beauty treatments. The Chedi Andermatt offers gourmet dining and elegant lounging, including a signature Asian restaurant, a restaurant featuring Western and European favorites, a spacious lounge with an international selection of cigars and wines, and a stylish après ski bar. The units are available starting at USD 2 million for a one-bedroom apartment.
