The results show that Europeans see the luxury industry in a favourable light: 76% of all respondents said that the luxury sector creates jobs in Europe while 71% thought that it promotes Europe's cultural influence in the world.
The three European MPs sponsoring the presentation – Constance Le Grip (France), Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou (Greece) and Amalia Sartori (Italy) – pointed out that these findings converge with the work done by the European Parliament in favour of the cultural and creative industries, including the luxury sector, to encourage growth, employment and competitiveness in Europe.
The Comité Colbert was pleased at this positive opinion, which reflects the economic realities of a sector representing 3% of the GDP of the European Union, 10% of its exports and 1.5 million jobs.
The association is pursuing a dynamic strategy to reach EU institutions effectively. The Comité Colbert was heard by the European Parliament on April 22**. As for the Commission, the Comité Colbert has contributed to the work done by Commissioners Tajani and Vassiliou and salutes their action in favour of the luxury sector.
In another move to boost visibility and build representation for the luxury sector in Europe, the Comité Colbert is organizing a meeting on June 26 and 27 in Berlin with its German counterpart, the Meisterkreis, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty. Several high level political meetings are on the agenda.
Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, President and CEO of the Comité Colbert, notes that "2013 has been a turning point in terms of recognition for our sector. Both EU institutions and public opinion are becoming more aware of the specificity of the luxury sector and its potential for growth in Europe."
*The European Cultural and Creative Industries Alliance (ECCIA) is composed of five national associations of cultural and creative luxury industries: Circulo Fortuny (Spain), Comité Colbert (France), Fondazione Altagamma (Italy), Meisterkreis (Germany) and Walpole (United Kingdom).
