To gain this coveted award, the resort has had to report their environmental footprint to independent auditors and adhere to internationally recognized standards of Best Practices. Earth Check rates the effectiveness of industry efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) and conserve natural resources at a project-by-project level. The data is then measured against a number of key indicators such as energy and water consumption, total waste production, and community commitment.

There are 6 major points that reviewed by the Auditor for both resorts: policy, benchmarking, compliance, approach, performance and communication. The last section details the requirements for communicating an organisation’s environmental and social commitment, goals and objectives to all stakeholders.

By taking a scientific approach to measuring the effectiveness of their sustainability practices, The St. Regis Bali Resort is able to identify if they are out-performing others and if there any rooms for improvement. Securing a highly-ranked benchmarking result requires a strong commitment across all levels of an organization and the imbedding of sustainability principles into all policies and procedures.

“It is indeed our goal that guests feeling better and secured when they stay with us, we recognize the importance of not compromising the environment to achieve this objective. We are pleased to be able to retain our Earth Check Silver,” said Lucia Liu, Hotel Manager of The St. Regis Bali Resort.

About Earth Check

Earth Check is a science-based benchmarking and certification program that requires us to operate at the highest possible international standards. Our property undergoes an independent, third party audit at least once every two years, with verification of our green credentials and emissions-reporting taking place on an annual basis. This provides our guest, stakeholder and business partner with certainty that what we say we’re doing, is actually taking place and making a positive difference.

EarthCheck is one of the world's largest certifiers of sustainable travel and tourism operators; with more than 1,200 clients in over 65 countries. EarthCheck certification complies with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 14064 range of standards for greenhouse gas accounting. Only businesses awarded the EarthCheck seal can claim to be independently recognized as sustainable.

For travellers the world over, it’s good to know there’s a credible body keeping track of sustainability claims. The EarthCheck logo represents the travel and tourism’s efforts to come together and take meaningful steps to address the serious challenges faced by the planet.
