Chef Gurcan Gulmez of Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet has won the first Turkish Bocuse d’Or, held on March 9, 2013. Candidate chefs competed in this national selection event and Gurcan Gulmez was chosen to represent Turkey as one of the finalists at Bocuse d’Or Europe 2014 in Stockholm, Sweden in May 2014, to which 12 countries will be attending.
Like many traditional Turkish chefs, Gurcan graduated from Mengen Cookery High School in 1997 and began his professional career in 2002 after his military service. He worked in many restaurants and hotels until April 2005, when he first joined Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, where he continues to work as Sous Chef.
Since then, he has worked with several executive chefs and gained a valuable experience. Gurcan has had the chance to attend a few cooking contests not only with the team but also on his own to represent Turkey in different platforms. One of these occasions was the International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition, which was held in Australia in 2006, where he won 1st prize. He was also a part of the winning team for Ottoman Food Competition that was held in Amasya in 2008.
The Bocuse d'Or is a biennial world chef championship. Named for the chef Paul Bocuse, the event takes place during two days near the end of January in Lyon, France at the SIRHA International Hotel, Catering and Food Trade Exhibition, and is one of the world's most prestigious cooking competitions
