Helped Build the Hotel Management Company into One of the Largest in the USA

Dennis Blyshak, the well-known and respected hospitality executive who served for many years as chief financial officer of Benchmark Hospitality International, and most recently as chief corporate officer, has announced his retirement the end of this month. Mr. Blyshak started with Benchmark Hospitality 25 years ago in on-property controller assignments. He launched his career in finance 42 years ago working for Alcoa Aluminum. Two years later he joined Stouffer Hotels and subsequently never left the hospitality industry.

“Upon Dennis assuming his role as chief corporate officer, I agreed that when he wanted to retire, I would honor his decision, wish him well and not try to convince him otherwise,” said Burt Cabañas, Benchmark’s founder, chairman and CEO. “Now that this day has arrived, I and the team here at Benchmark find it difficult to imagine our company without Dennis’ wise counsel and his friendship. He is one of the finest persons I’ve had the pleasure to work with over the past many decades and I speak for the Benchmark team in wishing Dennis and his family great pleasure in retirement.”

Dennis Blyshak’s tenure at Benchmark Hospitality International began in 1987, when he joined the company as controller for Seabrook Island Resort in South Carolina. He quickly moved to The Woodlands Resort near Houston, leading the property’s accounting department. His last role within a Benchmark hotel, prior to joining the company’s headquarters team, was as controller for The Northland Inn in Minneapolis.

In 1990, Mr. Blyshak moved to Benchmark Hospitality’s Home Office in The Woodlands near Houston, to serve as corporate controller. He was rapidly promoted to Benchmark’s vice president and controller, and subsequently promoted again to senior vice president financial operations. Blyshak served as the company’s chief financial officer during a period of rapid growth, holding this position for well over a decade. During this time, Benchmark Hospitality International tripled in size, becoming a leading U.S.-based hospitality management company.

Dennis Blyshak entered the hospitality industry at a time when personal integrity was high and a handshake was a person’s bond. He lived this honorably every day of his 25 years with Benchmark Hospitality, according to Burt Cabañas, who said that though he would sorely miss Blyshak, he celebrated his business and personal integrity and thirst for excellence, which was instrumental in making Benchmark the company it is today.
