This year, the Michelin two-star Shang Palace at Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong teams up with the first Asian Master of Wine, Jeannie Cho Lee of Asian Palate, and Château Guiraud to invite wine connoisseurs interested in a novel gourmet experience to indulge in a new and exclusive moon cake creation that merges a traditional Mid Autumn delicacy with premium sweet wine from France – the Mini Custard Sauternes Moon Cake.

Also gracing this year’s moon cake selection are Mini Five Kernels Moon Cakes with Parma Ham, Mini Pineapple Paste Moon Cakes with Mashed Egg Yolk, the ever popular custard moon cakes infused with black truffle from France, as well as a choice of traditional flavours. Two ranges of auspicious cookies, gift packs and hampers brimming with festive goodies and fine food are also available for guests to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on 30 September 2012.

The innovative Mini Custard Sauternes Moon Cake concept is from Ms Lee, who has spent the past six years exploring and writing about where Asian cuisine and wine meet. The Sauternes used is of the finest quality, from Château Guiraud’s second wine – Petite Guiraud – from the highly regarded 2009 vintage. As a Sauternes property classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, the perfumed sweet wine has an extremely refined sweetness along with freshness. The subtle sweetness and floral flavours in the Sauternes moon cakes, therefore, come from the Sauternes wine as opposed to added sugar.

“It’s another attempt to write a new chapter in the Mid-Autumn Festival traditions. We are happy to incorporate Sauternes wine into our custard moon cakes, and, hopefully, not only will this crossover bring a new experience to our guests but it will also lay a solid foundation for future development with Ms Lee and Château Guiraud,” said Chef Mok Kit Keung, executive Chinese chef of the hotel.

Ms Lee said, “the Sauternes moon cakes were created with the thought of a perfect union – a chilled glass of Château Guiraud enhancing the appreciation of the moon cake's soft, light crust and the flavours of honey, osmanthus and dried apricots echoing back and forth from the glass to the custard filling.”

Signature Mid-Autumn Festival cookies – “Oneness” and “Celebration” – are also back by popular demand this year. “Oneness,” depicting uniqueness, completeness and togetherness, is a delicate and premium morsel that comes with a choice of flavours – white lotus seed paste or red bean paste with crispy biscuits, topped with a rabbit, which plays a significant role in the legend. “Celebration” is a collection of cookies made of the main ingredients of traditional moon cakes – lotus seed paste, freshly baked with nuts and dried apricot – and is suitable for any occasion and any season.

The moon cakes are all lard-free and made with traditional and innovative recipes. The variety of moon cakes and cookies available is as follows:

- Mini Custard Sauternes Moon Cakes (eight / 12 pieces) 288 / 538
- Mini Crispy Custard Moon Cakes with Black Truffle (six pieces) &
