Experience the intoxicating blend of regal splendor cut through with a raw industrial edge at DOWNTOWN Mexico, a new Design Hotels' member hotel opening on June 15. Located in Mexico City’s Centro Histórico, Grupo Habita’s latest venture is a contemporary celebration of indigenous culture and colonial style. In a move that is characteristic of Grupo Habita’s properties, a hand-selected group of architects and designers were enlisted to create an ambience and design aesthetic that pays homage to the building’s location and heritage. With interior architecture by Cherem Serrano Arquitectos and furnishings by Paul Roco, the 17th century Palacio de los Condes de Miravalle was transformed into the epitome of stripped-back bohemian chic. The palace retains it regal elegance through the preservation of original components such as the stone-forge staircase with intricate handrails, handmade cement tiles, and graceful columned arches.
In direct contrast to the impressively ornate façade, the public spaces are an oasis of organic simplicity with grey volcanic rock and exposed concrete walls. The 17 suites range from the refreshingly simple, with original flooring tiles and rustic furnishings, to the dramatic, with light timber detailing and vaulted brick ceilings. Private balconies look out onto the cobbled streets of the old town or the immaculately manicured patio – yet another original feature painstakingly preserved during the extensive renovation works.
DOWNTOWN Mexico’s immense terrace, which covers the entire rooftop, is the very definition of minimalist chic. The rooftop boasts a bar and swimming pool, certainly an unexpected luxury in such an urban location. Constructed entirely from cement tiles and concrete, the space has an industrial edge which provides the perfect counterpart to the stunning vistas over Mexico City’s historic old town.
Location and rates
DOWNTOWN Mexico is located in the heart of Centro Histórico, one of Mexico City’s 16 districts and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is defined by its narrow cobblestone street and colonial landmarks, some of which date back to the 16th century.
Rates range from USD 195 to 345.
