Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced the appointment of Jan Goessing as General Manager and Area Vice President Operations (New York and Boston). In this role, Mr Goessing will become General Manager of the Group’s North American flagship property Mandarin Oriental, New York, and will also oversee operations at Mandarin Oriental, Boston. Amanda Hyndman has been appointed General Manager of Mandarin Oriental Bangkok.

Jan Goessing takes up his new position, following the departure of Rudy Tauscher as General Manager and Area Vice President Operations, who leaves the Group to pursue his own business venture outside of the industry. Mr Goessing has spent the past 18 years with Mandarin Oriental in senior management positions throughout Asia and The Americas. From 1998 to 2006, he was General Manager of the Group’s former property in Hawaii, Kahala Mandarin Oriental, during which time it became well established as one of the best urban resorts in the region. In 2006, he was appointed General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC and was instrumental in positioning the property as one of the city’s most successful luxury hotels. Mr Goessing was appointed General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok following the retirement in 2009 of legendary hotelier, Kurt Wachtveitl, and has helped to ensure this flagship property remains the indisputable market leader in the city.

Richard Baker, Executive Vice President, Operations Director – The Americas said, “We would like to thank Rudy for his passion in establishing both Mandarin Oriental, New York and Boston as leading hotels in their respective cities, and we wish him every success in his new venture. We are also delighted to welcome Jan to his new role. His long tenure with the Group and commitment to excellence means he is well placed to steer the Group’s North American flagship and our award-winning property in Boston.”

Mr Goessing is succeeded by Amanda Hyndman, who joined Mandarin Oriental in 2007 as General Manager of The Excelsior, Hong Kong. Here, she focused on enhancing the hotel’s Guest Advocacy and Colleague Engagement scores and oversaw the renovation of various hotel outlets and guest facilities. In 2009, she was appointed General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, and during her tenure has been instrumental in raising the profile of the property both locally, through significant community involvement, as well as internationally. She was awarded General Manager of the Year at the Hotel Association of Washington DC – ‘Stars of the Industry’ Awards.

Commenting on the appointment, Andrew Hirst, Operations Director, Asia said, “We are delighted to see Amanda return to Asia. With many years of valuable experience in key locations, and her undoubted commitment to the highest levels of service, Amanda is well positioned for her new role at the legendary Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.”

Both appointments will commence in mid-July 2012. A successor to Ms Hyndman at Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC will be announced in due course.
