Ensuring visibility and sustainability of our tourism industry - The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA)

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) has announced the formal classification, grading and eligibility criteria for hotels in Mauritius. The main objective is to ensure a better visibility for the tourism industry and to insist that quality remains dominant through a sustainable quality label.
This classification is made of several eligibility criteria. It requires sustained efforts to enforce continued vigilance and maintain the reputation of hotels, and most importantly, that of Mauritius.
Many key players of the tourism industry and stakeholders of the hotel classification project attended the press conference together with the Minister of Tourism and Leisure, the Hon. Michael Sik Yuen.
The Minister unveiled the first part of the hotel classification and grading which is an exercise that has been conducted by the tourism office under the aegis of the chairman of the MTPA, Mr. Robert Desvaux.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Leisure, “The classification of hotels is a must because it has often been distorted. Hotels have been auto-classified and following tour operators’ criteria, itself based on the size of the hotel and so on.”
The new methodology will improve the quality of infrastructure and services offered to customers in hotels for a more sustainable tourism industry.
Answering to questions of the press, the chairman of the MTPA, Mr Robert Desvaux has emphasized that around the world "the methods used are largely based on objective criteria to determine star ratings. The MTPA’s approach, however, is a blend of the universal, recognized and objective criteria and which is adapted by the European system. It also takes into account the degree of appreciation when tour operators are selling hotels. Moreover, the new system implemented and introduced by the MTPA takes into account the realities of the Mauritian context. Everything has been compiled in a well defined Code of Conduct for the tourism professionals"
This approach has, therefore, the merit of satisfying the needs and expectations of customers and be largely accepted by hotels.
In addition, customers, tour operators and the public in general will have the opportunity to inform the MTPA, through its website, of any discrepancy they notice between the classification of a hotel and its actual level of service. They will also be able to suggest other criteria they may deem important to improve in the hotel. This information will then be submitted to the Board of the MTPA for possible improvements and may also be used in the process of classification, upgrade or downgrade.
