John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts today announced Springfield attorney Greggory D. Groves will join the company in mid-May as the senior vice president and general counsel of the company. His extensive 24 years of legal experience includes work as outside counsel for John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts. Springfield, Mo.-based John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts is the largest private, independent owner and manager of hotels in the United States.
Groves will report directly to John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts' CEO Jacquie Dowdy. He will be responsible for real estate and financing transactions, hotel development activities, acquisitions/dispositions, operational compliance of hotel and corporate legal entities, contracts management, franchise licensing, documentation and compliance, human resources, and oversight of claims and litigation involving the company.
Groves will succeed Justin Harris, who will continue to collaborate with John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts in a consulting role while pursuing unrelated family-owned and start-up business ventures. Groves and Harris previously worked together for several years as partners in the Springfield law firm Lowther Johnson Attorneys at Law, LLC.
“Backed by his years of hands-on knowledge of John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts and decades of legal and management experience, Gregg is the ideal candidate to be our general counsel and he will hit the ground running,” Dowdy said. “Gregg comes highly recommended by Justin Harris, whose opinion I value tremendously.”
Dowdy added, “I also look forward to continuing to work with Justin as a trusted advisor and publicly thank him for his years of excellent service. I wish him all the best with his future entrepreneurial ventures.”
Groves is currently managing member of Lowther Johnson, where he has practiced law since 1988, including work as legal counsel for John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts. He brings extensive experience in business, litigation, employment and corporate law to his new position at John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts. He is a frequent speaker on legal issues and a committed participant in the Springfield community. Groves’ past and present service on local boards includes The Victim Center; American Heart Association; Truth Academy, Inc.; and Metro Credit Union. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Missouri State University.
“As a Springfield resident, I have great respect for the John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts organization and Mr. Hammons’ business and philanthropic accomplishments,” Groves said. “I look forward to joining the obviously effective and collaborative executive team at the company as they work to continue John Q. Hammons’ legacy of excellence.”
