Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) will manage its third Renaissance-branded hotel in Shanghai under an agreement reached with Shanghai Yuyuan Hotel Development Co., Ltd. The property will be called the Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan Hotel and will open in 2008. It will join two other Renaissance hotels in the city—the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel and the Renaissance Shanghai Yangtze Hotel—and will be the ninth Renaissance-branded hotel in China.
The Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan Hotel will be located on Henan South Road in the Huangpu district of Puxi and will be targeted to the individual corporate and leisure traveler. Nearby is Yuyuan, one of the main tourist attractions in Shanghai. Completed in 1577, Yuyuan is a traditional Chinese park complete with beautiful pavilions, miniature lakes, bridges and rock formations; it remains the only Ming-era garden in Shanghai. The area surrounding Yuyuan is known as the Old City and is home to local attractions such as the Temple of the City God, the famous Huixinting Tea House and the Yuyuan markets, a bazaar of stores that sell traditional Chinese arts and crafts as well as souvenirs.
“We are thrilled to have our third Renaissance hotel in Shanghai,” said Ed Fuller, president & managing director of international lodging for Marriott. “The city has long held magical appeal as a ‘must see’ destination for the leisure traveler. Today, it is also a cosmopolitan international business center and is developing into a key regional meeting and exhibition venue. We’re confident that our newest Renaissance hotel in Shanghai will be very appealing to both business and leisure travelers.”
For dining and entertainment, the Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan Hotel will have two outlets: a Chinese restaurant with three private dining rooms, and an all-day restaurant featuring a permanent grand buffet and one private dining room. The lobby will feature a lounge and a bar. For recreation, the hotel will have a health club with an exercise area, changing rooms and a small sauna.
Other amenities will include an executive lounge with two small meeting rooms, a business center and a gift shop.
