When The Eldon Luxury Suites Hotel opened in 2009, the operations team installed a variety of healthy snacks for guests’ purchase in each of the hotel’s 50 spacious suites. The Eldon, which is ideally located on L Street within walking distance to the White House, US Capitol and Washington DC’s world-renowned museums, considered the healthy snacks the most appropriate and desired in-room choice for business, government and consumer guests. They were also following the national trend toward healthier lifestyles.
The hotel increasingly found, however, that the healthy snacks simply didn’t sell well, or in some cases didn’t sell at all. Even when substituting selections, the property found that items expired before purchase, and a number of products had to be disposed of each month, creating waste and turning what should have been a profit center into a monthly loss.
“When we first started our snack bar line up at The Eldon,” said Vinh Nguyen, general manager. “we chose several healthy snack options which were packaged for the hotel. We had international trail mix with fruit and nuts, low sodium pretzel nuggets, etc.” Mr. Nguyen continued with, “a major problem we had with this line up, though, was that they were not selling in time before their shelf life expired.”
So, the operations team countered the national and global trend toward healthy eating, deciding a little personal indulgence might be just what guests wanted away from home and after a day of meetings, sightseeing or museum going.
“We reexamined the in-room products we were offering at The Eldon and their sell history, and started replacing select items with sweets,” stated Mr. Nguyen. “They sold like hotcakes. We now offer an in-room snack bar ranging from chocolate cappuccino bars, chocolate covered almonds, chocolate covered cherries, and chocolate chip cookies! Gummy bears are our number one selling snack!”
Though this may seem to counter current health trends, the items sell and sell at a fast pace, eliminating waste and adding to the hotel’s incidentals bottom line. “I believe at the end of the day, when guests are traveling and away from home, they prefer to indulge in some of life’s more innocent guilty pleasures -- through the in-room snack bar,” Nguyen concluded.
