This year, to celebrate His Majesty the King Bhumibol’s 84th birthday, Bangkok’s residents and visitors will have a unique chance to see the Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya River, the ‘River of Kings.’ Praya Palazzo’s riverside location will provide guests front seats to witness this grand spectacle.
The Royal Barge Procession is an ancient tradition, dating back to the 13th century, which was revived by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1959. This procession is reserved for nationally auspicious occasions and has taken place only sixteen times since then. The last time was in June 2006 for the diamond jubilee celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne.
On 22 October, the royal kathin procession will consist of a fleet of 52 traditional-style barges. They will be arranged in five columns, based on a battle formation from ancient times, stretch 1,280 metres in length and 110 across and require 2,200 sailors from the Royal Thai Navy. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over the celebrations on behalf of His Majesty the King.
The Royal Barge Procession is truly a breathtaking spectacle: watching these 52 barges gliding down the Chao Phraya River remains awe inspiring. Their majestic beauty and grace along with the chants will mesmerize spectators.
Guests coming to Praya Palazzo will be dazzled by such regal splendor as they follow the ceremony right on the Chao Phraya River.
On 13 and 18 October, dress rehearsals will be held and will allow guests to have a sneak preview of the ceremony.
On the official date of 22 October 2011, the Praya Palazzo team have prepared activities for guests to enjoy the afternoon: a special Thai set lunch featuring signature dishes will be followed by afternoon tea.
Also, guests will be pampered with complimentary foot massages and will have a chance to win a prize.
