27th ANNUAL CALIFORNIA COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY
Tens of thousands of Californians, including a pledge of 1,000 California Fairmont Hotels & Resorts colleagues, friends and family members will gather along the beaches, shorelines, and inland waterways of the state on Saturday, September 17, 2011, to clear away the debris that has been deposited over the past year.
In 2010, over 82,500 volunteers removed more than 1.2 million pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world.
When: Saturday, September 17, from 9 am to noon in most locations.
Where: Cleanups will take place at over 750 sites on California beaches, bays, rivers, creeks, parks, roadsides, and highways. Call the local coordinator for exact locations and other site-specific information. For further detail, visit California Coastal’s web site at www.coast4u.org.
Why: “California Coastal Cleanup Day is a significant coastal protection and restoration volunteer event and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts of California is a proud sponsor of this effort, says Tom Klein, Regional Vice-President of Operations and General Manager at the Fairmont San Francisco. Over a century ago Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land, communities and people where we do business. Energizing our commitment to 'think globally and act locally', we are proud to support hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships and learning while addressing a universal environmental issue in a way that hits close to home. Coastal Cleanup Day teaches all Californians that our everyday actions have broad implications for the well-being of our oceans and the habitat and wildlife that depend on them.”
