Hyatt veteran selected to lead award-winning culinary team

The AAA Four Diamond Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa, the newest luxury resort on Florida’s west coast, announces the appointment of Chef Richard Preston to the position of executive chef.

“We are proud to have Chef Preston serve as our new executive chef,” said General Manager Brian Kramer. “Richard is well qualified for the role, having launched restaurants and large-scale events in some of our largest markets. Because he has been a part of our culinary team since the resort’s opening, the transition will be seamless for diners and guests.”

Executive Chef Preston will be responsible for the resort’s overall culinary offerings, overseeing all dining outlets: SHOR American Seafood Grill, featuring a dramatic show kitchen and panoramic Gulf views; Swim, a casual poolside eatery with a Pan-Latino fusion menu; Skimmers, a grab-and-go coffee station by day and lively lobby bar by night; and banquet as well as in-room dining.

Like many, Preston had humble beginnings in the restaurant industry. He began his career at the age of 15, washing dishes at a popular dinner theater in his native Calgary, Canada. Envying the excitement, collaboration and creativity of the theater’s culinary team, he set his sights on becoming a chef. He quickly worked his way up and achieved the position of sous chef for Hyatt Regency Calgary. During his tenure there, he prepared themed menus for social gatherings of up to 5,550 discerning diners.

Preston joined Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach as sous chef in October 2010. Now as he approaches his tenth year with Hyatt, he looks forward to leading the resort’s culinary team and is particularly proud to unveil SHOR’s new dinner menu, a product of his team-centric philosophy.

“Developing SHOR’s new menu was a collaborative effort shared by the entire team,” said Preston. “The menu is a ‘best of’ list, featuring what we have found to be SHOR’s best sellers—classic favorites that are simply yet elegantly prepared.”

No stranger to the limelight, SHOR American Seafood Grill has earned the 2011 Best Dessert Award at Clearwater Beach’s Restaurant Week, the 2010 People’s Choice Best Taste Award at A Taste of Clearwater and Tampa Bay Magazine’s Best of Tampa Bay Award for the last two consecutive years.

“SHOR delivers the finest quality products available at price points that are comfortable for resort-style dining, whether you are a guest on a two-week vacation or a local joining us for lunch or dinner,” said Preston. “The only rival to our food is our panoramic view of Clearwater Beach, also a favorite among travelers and locals alike.”
