Si Zi Kang Restaurant Offers Gourmet Tibetan Dining in Tibet’s First International Luxury Hotel

A visit to the world’s highest luxury hotel isn’t complete without an evening at Si Zi Kang, the one-of-a-kind, signature authentic Tibetan restaurant at the St. Regis Lhasa Resort. One of three internationally-inspired gastronomic offerings from the new St. Regis Lhasa Resort, Si Zi Kang offers a gourmand’s take on traditional and authentic Tibetan food, with a seasonal menu and setting that celebrates the local culture and spectacular environs.

At 12,000 feet above sea level, The St. Regis Lhasa Resort boasts awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas and Lhasa Valley, and offers refined luxury and unparalleled service in a storied city. Embracing the natural beauty and mysticism of the region, Si Zi Kang is the first gastronomic Tibetan restaurant featuring authentic Tibetan and Nepalese cuisine in a traditional and relaxed setting with scenic views of Lhasa and the surrounding mountains. The ambience is truly welcoming – an extension of a traditional Tibetan living room – with warm, rich colors and woods and generous, plush seating set upon a sea of colorful, locally-handcrafted carpets.

Si Zi Kang features the culinary expertise of native Tibetan chefs Tsering Ngodup and David Ci Dan Ruo Jie, have spent years honing their skills in a diverse array of international kitchens. Chef Tsering got his start at Park Plaza in Gurgaon, Haryana in India, learning to execute in a large kitchen for a variety of guests. He left to work at a large restaurant in New Delhi, where he ran the Tandoori grill and honed his expertise with Tandoori-style cooking. He returned to Tibet to run the kitchen of a local hotel before coming to the St. Regis Lhasa Resort. Chef David got his start in the kitchen of a local Lhasa hotel; before moving onto another hotel where he served as executive chef. He then moved to a popular Lhasa restaurant (Que Song Lin Tibetan Restaurant, Lhasa) where, as sous chef, he created the daily menus.

Under the direction of Chefs Tsering and David, the seasonal menus are inspired by the Lhasa region and its surroundings, and incorporate local, seasonal products and ingredients, traditional preparation and cooking methods, as well as delectable new innovations.

Starters include Paneer pakora, crunchy paneer coated with besan, Indian masala and served with tomato sauce; Shabaleb traditional Tibetan beef patties comprised of deep fried bread stuffed with sautéed minced beef; Doenang dangtsel Tibetan black barley salad stuffed in pumpkin and mushrooms, topped with cheese from Shigatse; and Momo, Tibet’s most common or popular dumpling with yak or chicken. A savory selection of curries includes: Yak Curry, thick Himalayan brown curry with yak meat and garnish with chopped coriander; Saag Ghost, a traditional Punjabi lamb dish, garnished with a julienne of ginger and fresh cream; or Patiala chicken, served in white gravy, topped with almonds and raisins. Selections from the Tandoori oven include: Tandoori Chicken; Chicken Sekka; and Lamb Seekh Kabob. A selection of noodle and rice plates include Thukpa Gyathuk, traditional Tibetan noodles with yak meat; Soagthuk, Mongolian noodles with yak meat and fresh vegetables; Tsipthak, crispy fried lamb chops, served with a vegetable – barley risotto; and Damday, traditional fried rice with yak meat, capsicum, hosun and carrots.

In addition to Si Zi Kang, The St. Regis Lhasa Resort other culinary offerings include: Yan Ting, with a sophisticated, modern Cantonese and Sichuanese menu amidst a spacious, glamorous setting with a view of Resort’s calm lake; Social, a convenient all-day restaurant featuring international specialties from South East Asia and Europe; Decanter by Haut-Brisson, the region’s first wine bar; and the Tea Room, a signature St. Regis twist on the traditional local tea house.
