Hutong and Yun Fu, the two award-winning Chinese restaurants in the Aqua Restaurant Group, will be bringing fortune and prosperity to guests this Chinese New Year with traditional Lo Hei salad.

The origins of Lo Hei salad date back more than 750 years to the days of the Song Dynasty when fishermen along the coast of China would celebrate the seventh day of Chinese New Year, known as Renri ‘everyone’s birthday’, with this fresh fish and diced vegetable dish. According to tradition each diner shares in the mixing of the ingredients, tossing the salad as high as possible with his or her chopsticks and calling out ‘Lo Hei! Lo Hei!’ literally meaning ‘Mix it Up’ but sounding like ‘More and more prosperity’. The higher you toss the more prosperity!
Throughout Chinese New Year from 10th January to the end of February, both Hutong and Yun Fu are keeping the tradition of Lo Hei alive with their own versions of the traditional dish.

Yun Fu, meaning ‘House on Wyndham’ and appropriately located on Central’s Wyndham Street, will be serving traditional Lo Hei salad featuring Hamachi fish, geoduck, abalone, diced cucumber and carrot mixed with a rich plum sauce.

Over on the Tsim Sha Tsui side of the harbour, the ‘Raise the Red Lantern’ style northern Chinese restaurant Hutong will be serving Shanghai-style Lo Hei with lamb and Shanghai sesame dressing to accompany the traditional ingredients of fresh and dried seafood with diced cucumber and carrot.

Lo Hei salad is priced at $728+10% and is ideal for sharing for 4 to 6 people. For reservations call Hutong on 3428 3842 and Yun Fu on 2116 8855 or book online at www.aqua.com.hk.
