Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel due for December debut and Sofitel Angkor celebrates a rare visit from The Secretary of States

Sofitel Luxury Hotels has been claiming leading high-end market positions in major destinations and capital cities around the globe. Spotting Phnom Penh, Cambodia as a fast growing tourist and business destination, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is scheduled to open on 11th December, 2010. The growing interest in Cambodia also led to a visit from Hilary Rodham Clinton, earlier in October 2010 to the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort.

The new 201- room hotel will be the city’s first 5-star debut in a decade. Sofitel Phonm Penh Phokeethra welcomes Didier Lamoot as the new General Manager. Lamoot previously worked at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort as General Manager and brings with him six years of expertise.

The hotel opening redefines the city’s upscale appeal, positioning Sofitel as the most sophisticated new hospitality opportunity not only in Phnom Penh but in the region at large. More than 6,000 candidates applied for work at the hotel, buoyed by the brand’s reputation and the bold investment of a US$50 million by a consortium of Cambodian, Thai and French investors.

The 12-storey hotel occupies four hectares in a prime, riverside location which is only 15 kilometres from the airport. Within five years, the city’s evolving centre is expected to focus around Sofitel. Located in an upmarket residential quarter, downstream from Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace, the hotel’s debut will introduce eight new restaurants and bars to the city, a top floor executive lounge, Club Millésime, as well as Southeast Asia’s first Sofitel-brand ‘So SPA’ and ‘So FIT’. Overlooking the pool and the river Sofitel So SPA enjoys expansive quarters on the hotel’s third floor. The Phokeethra Sports Club features tennis courts and squash courts, as well an outdoor swimming pool, a children’s club and fitness equipment.

Its five state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a 1,800-square-meter grand ballroom and a 1,200-square-meter pre-function space are set to develop a growing interest in Phnom Penh as a land of entrepreneurial opportunity. Sofitel will deploy its InspiredMeetings™ programme in the new facility, catering for intimate parties to large scale conferences. “As we look ahead to the next few years, Phnom Penh is likely to emerge as an attractive new venue among meetings and conference planners,” said Didier Lamoot. “For many people, Phnom Penh is one of Asia’s great new destinations, generating an enthusiasm that we’ve seen in the past for places like Vietnam and the Maldives,” said Lamoot. “The destination is fresh, and the ability to hop from here to Angkor is a major attraction.”

As a flourishing city in Cambodia, Angkor has charmed one of the most influential government officials in the world. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 67th United States Secretary of State, serving in the administration of President Barack Obama, visited Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort in occasion of her official visit to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Mr. Charles-Henri Chevet, General Manager and his team received a personal note, signed by Mrs. Clinton saying “Thank you for your gracious hospitality, impeccable service and warm welcome in this beautiful setting. Best wishes”, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
