Tourism Council of BC Recognizes The Fairmont Waterfront with Environmentally Responsible Award

Being green is good business. In today’s world, a casual nod will no longer suffice as there’s an expectation of businesses to have a strategic commitment in place for everyone to do their part. Guests of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts have continually expressed their appreciation and embraced the luxury brand’s leading environmental initiatives from signature eco programs to greening our operational systems and practices. The Fairmont Waterfront’s twenty year commitment is recognized by the Council of Tourism Associations as the 2010 recipient of the Delta Hotels Environmentally Responsible Tourism Award. The Fairmont Waterfront’s multi-faceted Green Partnership program includes initiatives such as managing a roof top apiary of 500,000 honeybees, growing its own herbs for the hotel’s kitchens and leading the industry in waste management, energy and water conservation.

“We’re delighted to receive this award and be recognized by our industry as a proponent of a sustainable business model,” says General Manager, Ian Pullan. “Whether it’s our Green Team implementing a new guest initiative or our Food & Beverage team making a decision to replace product with our own signature rooftop honey, we know that the hotel’s culture allows us to continually rethink and improve our operations.”

“The Fairmont Waterfront’s extensive environmental initiatives from both the front and back-of-the-house were so comprehensive, it was clearly evident across the board that they should be acknowledged for their efforts in this category,” responds Stephen Regan, President and CEO, COTA. “We hope that The Fairmont Waterfront sets an example for many more businesses to follow and incorporate programs of their own.”

Full details of the 2010 award winners announced at the 17th Annual Tourism Industry Awards gala dinner can be found at www.bctourismindustryconference.ca/awards.html.
