Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa announced today their official inauguration as part of the Marriott International family, bringing the first full-service Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand to the popular tourism destination of Lee County in Southwest Florida. The hotel is poised to benefit from Marriott's loyal brand following, which drives new customers in both the leisure and group markets. The 347 room resort is owned and managed by Columbia Sussex, and will operate under a franchisee agreement with Marriott International, Inc.

"We own and operate 36 Marriott hotels. Columbia Sussex knows the Marriott brand well enough to know we could not pass on this opportunity," says Bruce Rathje, vice president sales and marketing at Columbia Sussex Corporation.

In its transition to a Marriott, the resort will offer an upgraded bedding package and installation of flat screen high-definition televisions in the Sanibel Tower and Captiva Tower. Along with a number of other upgrades, the total resort renovations are expected to be complete by the end of 2011.

As a franchise partner of Marriott, the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa will have access to Marriott's global reservations system, as well as their industry leading sales and marketing engines targeting both group and leisure customers. The resort will also participate in the Marriott Rewards program, Marriott International's award-winning guest loyalty program offering guests the capability to redeem points at over 3,000 properties in 67 countries.

"Marriott brings so much strength in small groups. We will now have access to 5,000-6,000 group rooms, which have never met in Sanibel before," says Cory Clark, general manager of Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa. "As well there are at least 8,000-9,000 room nights of Marriott Reward redemption each year so that will add around 3,000-4,000 new tourists to the area each year."

"We are thrilled to have the Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand in the Sanibel Island area with such a pristine product. We see a tremendous opportunity for growth in this area, and we look forward to welcoming new guests to Southwest Florida," said Rob Steigerwald, Chief Operating Officer of the southern region for Marriott International.

A recent winner of the Golden Key Award by Meetings and Conventions magazine, and recipient of the Planners Choice award by Meetings News, Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa presents more than 45,000 sq. ft. of function space with spectacular floor-to-ceiling views of the natural surroundings. The 34,000 sq. ft. of plush outdoor space includes a private pool with palm-peppered deck and lush lawns. With coastal views as the backdrop, Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa offers refreshing meeting amenities and breakout activities with an outstanding service staff and lavish catering options.

Chef Felix Nunez creates savory tastes among the seven dining options including everything from casual pool fare to decadent steak restaurant. The Sanibel Harbour Princess, the resort's 100-foot luxury yacht offers nightly sunset dinner cruises and Sunday brunch. The 40,000 square-foot Spa offers an expansive fitness center and includes 29 treatment rooms.

The 85-acre Florida Green Lodging resort is located on a private peninsula overlooking Sanibel and Captiva islands. Only 25 minutes from the new Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, the resort is a recipient of the AAA Four-Diamond Award since 1992.
