It’s that time of the year again when the rest of the nation is shopping for jackets and sweaters, and the State of Florida is welcoming the incoming breeze and its sunny skies. VISIT FLORIDA and its Partners are welcoming everyone to enjoy what residents of the state enjoy year round, the Sunshine. Florida offers plenty of warm weather destinations throughout the Sunshine State.
During the winter months visitors can enjoy fresh water fishing locations throughout Florida. Lake Okeechobee, a 730-square-mile lake in south Central Florida is the state’s most famous bass fishing destination. Also, there is Lake George northwest of Deland, and Lake Tarpon in Pinellas County just to name a few. For more information on Florida fishing destinations go to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website www.myfwc.com..
Florida is also home to many of our airborne friends who visit for the winter. Northern weather is an excellent reason to plan a birders vacation at destinations such as The Great Florida Birding Trail. The trail is a program of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, supported in part by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Wildlife Foundation of Florida. The 2000-mile, self-guided highway trail unifies a total of 489 birding sites throughout Florida. Sites include Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach and Ochlocknee River State Park in Sopchoppy with more as you travel throughout the state. Find the trail guide at any number of nature centers or at VISIT FLORIDA Welcome Centers throughout the state. You can download a copy from the Great Florida Birding Trail website at www.floridabirdingtrail.com.
A winter camping trip is an ideal vacation during a stay in Florida. Destinations include Henderson State Park in Destin. The park has one of Florida's most prized assets, pristine white, sugar sand beaches. Curry Hammock State Park is a group of islands located in the Middle Keys, visit www.floridastateparks.org for more information. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp Resort (www.campjellystone.com) in North Florida is a unique recreational campground resort, open year ‘round that offers beautiful surroundings, outdoor adventure and fun for the whole family.
