The inaugural Singapore Green Hotel Award 2009
Strategically located in the heart of the financial district and one of Singapore’s premier business hotels, M Hotel Singapore received the inaugural Singapore Green Hotel Award 2009 from Guest-of-Honour Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources at the presentation ceremony held at the hotel.
Organised by the Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) and jointly supported by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), National Environment Agency (NEA), Public Utilities Board (PUB) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the Singapore Green Hotel Award recognises hotels which adopt environmentally-friendly practices in their endeavour to conserve Earth’s precious resources.
Since June 2008, M Hotel had implemented several conservation measures such as installing timers to switch off lights during off-peak hours, using low wattage, high efficiency L.E.D. (Light Emittance Diode) light bulbs and monitoring closely the daily operations of all equipment. The hotel also engages all its guests and staff in its bid to go green; whilst its guests are provided with the option of reusing their towels and changing their bed sheets and duvet covers on alternate days, all staff are strongly encouraged to practise the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle every day.
When cleaning rooms, room attendants are urged to make use of natural light whenever possible and to maintain air-conditioning thermostats at 22.5 Degree Celsius in unoccupied rooms. Banqueting staff were also informed to be prudent with the amount of lighting used whilst setting up events and to switch off all electricity at the end of all functions. Over at the Kitchen, all machinery is switched off when not in use, and dishwashers operated at full load to minimise energy consumption. These and other more measures are highlighted during staff orientation and regular briefings and reviews are conducted to affirm commitment and effectiveness.
M Hotel’s General Manager, Mr Clement Teo is pleased to be one of the fifteen recipients to receive the inaugural Singapore Green Hotel Award this year. Says Mr Teo, ‘Whilst these efforts contribute to M Hotel in becoming more energy efficient, we also recognise the importance of setting measurable standards and guidelines in ensuring that guest comfort and satisfaction, and employee safety are not compromised.’
One of M Hotel’s guests and a green advocate herself, Judy Tan has this to add, ‘Congratulations to M Hotel! I did notice the tent card that was placed in the bathroom and
it is great to know that the hotel is doing its part to be environmentally-friendly.’
