More than 500 hospitality industry leaders, Cornell alumni, and members of the media gathered for the School of Hotel Administration's first annual Icon of the Industry Awards Dinner. All of the proceeds from the gala event, which was held at the New York Marriott Marquis on June 2, 2009, will benefit the School's scholarships and programs.
J. W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., chairman and CEO, Marriott International, Inc., was honored as the first winner of the Cornell Icon of the Industry Award. Following the event, Marriott expressed his appreciation for the tribute, saying, "Thank you for a really terrific evening. Everything was superb. I was honored, humbled, and very grateful to you all."
This year's winners of the Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship's Hospitality Innovator Award were Fred Malek, CEO and Co-Founder, TIG Global, and Trip Schneck, President and Co-Founder, TIG Global
The School will be accepting nominations for next year's Icon of the Industry award recipient (a nomination form will be posted on this page soon). Criteria for nominees are:
• lifetime achievements in the hospitality industry and
• contributions to his or her community or society.
