The Spanish hotel company Sol Meliá has assumed the management of the Hotel de la Reconquista in Oviedo, one of the most emblematic hotels in Spain. The hotel officially joined the Sol Meliá portfolio of hotels last Friday 1 May under the Meliá brand.
The agreement was signed in an event held this morning presided over by the Counsellor for Culture and Tourism of the Principality of Asturias, Ms Mercedes Álvarez, and attended by the Chairwoman of Hoasa Ms Elisa Llaneza and the Vice Chairman of Sol Meliá, Sebastián Escarrer. The Spanish hotel chain now operates three hotels in the Principality, with the Hotel de la Reconquista joining the Tryp Rey Pelayo in Gijón and the Tryp Oviedo, both four star hotels.
Sol Meliá will manage the hotel for a period of 15 years, a period which may be extended by an additional maximum of 5 years, as specified in the terms and conditions of the bidding process defined by the hotel owners, Hotelería Asturiana S.A. (Hoasa), the majority shareholders of which are the Principality of Asturias itself and the savings bank Cajastur.
“We are very proud to welcome to Sol Meliá a hotel of the category of the Hotel de la Reconquista, a hotel which will bring us great prestige with events such as the presentation of the Prince of Asturias Awards”, explained the Vice Chairman and CEO of Sol Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, also adding that, “Sol Meliá opens the doors of its extensive sales network to this magnificent hotel, providing it with even greater international exposure”.
Enhancing the international exposure of the hotel
The fact that Sol Meliá is the largest resort hotel company in the world, the leading hotel company in Spain in both the city and resort hotel markets, the fifth largest hotel chain in Europe and number fifteen in the world ranking provides the company with unbeatable visibility both in Spain and abroad. Sol Meliá currently operates more than 300 hotels in 28 countries on 4 continents, with more than 76,500 rooms and more than 35,000 employees, its most important asset.
The Meliá Hotel de la Reconquista also joins the Meliá brand network along with 90 other hotels worldwide with 25,000 rooms of which 53% are in city destinations and 47% in resorts. In 2008, the more than 14,000 Meliá employees had the pleasure of providing service to over 9 million hotel stays all over the world.
Amongst the new features Meliá will bring to the Hotel de la Reconquista are the modernisation of the hotel bar and restaurant concepts, the creation of new room types including the exclusive The Level service, the intensification of the guest experience through new sensorial effects (lighting, aromas, music…) and the updating of staff uniforms.
There will also be a focus on the redesign of wellness services, strengthening of the presence of the hotel in the events, conventions and banquets market segments, promotion of the hotel as an ideal destination for weddings and honeymoons, as well as the creation of a ‘hotel museum’ in which art is added to the guest experience opportunities during their stay.
Amongst the attributes and values that the Meliá brand will bring to this magnificent Asturias hotel are a passion for service, a desire to create memorable experiences for guests, a fusion of architectural and interior design which encompasses both the largest spaces and the tiniest details, and a respect for the setting in which the hotel is located, both from an environmental and a cultural point of view.
In the proposal made by Sol Meliá, the Principality particularly welcomed the responsibility shown by the company to hotel staff concerns and measures designed to protect the natural environment, in addition to a desire to further integrate the hotel in the social and cultural life of Asturias and the capacity of the hotel to evolve towards a higher category brand in the medium term.
All this and more in a new stage for both the hotel and for Sol Meliá in general and the Meliá brand in particular, as the addition of a hotel as emblematic as the Hotel de la Reconquista in Oviedo further strengthens the category of its hotel portfolio.
