IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) [LON: IHG, NYSE: IHG (ADRs)], the world’s largest hotel group by number of rooms, has appointed Janis Cannon as vice president, global brand management, Hotel Indigo. In this newly created role, Cannon will lead a global team responsible for strategy, innovation, distribution, and rooms and revenue growth.
Cannon most recently served as vice president, brand management, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts for the Americas region. She was responsible for overseeing and driving the successful implementation of marketing strategies and programs to support InterContinental’s short- and long-term growth and profitability objectives. During her tenure, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts experienced tremendous growth in the U.S., Canada and Mexico increasing its number of hotels from 12 to 23 – almost doubling the brand’s size and presence in the region. In addition to these opening, Cannon spearheaded the brand’s growth on the U.S. West Coast, which added four hotels and resorts in less than three years for a total of five properties.
“With more than 25 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, Janis’ extensive background in branding, sales and marketing as well as her intimate understanding of hotel operations, make her an invaluable member of our executive team,” said Tom Seddon, chief marketing officer, IHG. “With the recent opening of Hotel Indigo London Paddington marking the brand’s global roll-out, now is the perfect time for Janis to take the reigns and drive success for the brand and our developers across the global marketplace.”
Launched in 2004, there are currently 24 Hotel Indigo properties open with more than 60 hotels under development, either in the pipeline or in final negotiation. Contributing to its global footprint, IHG will open Hotel Indigo properties in San Jose, Costa Rica (2008), Shanghai (2010) and three additional properties in London (2012). In North America, properties are scheduled to open in Baltimore, Miami, New York City, San Diego, St. Louis, and Toronto.
“Given the current economic challenges, the Hotel Indigo brand has a significant opportunity for global expansion as developers and travelers alike continue to seek value over excess without sacrificing service or style,” said Cannon. “I am looking forward to working with our development community to further strengthen the brand’s portfolio and expose the brand to new guests who are looking for a sensible boutique hotel that consistently delivers genuine and focused service in a refreshing and engaging environment.”
Throughout her career, Cannon has held several positions with Swissotel at the corporate level, including senior vice president of global sales where she was responsible for owner and investor relationship management; and vice president, Americas Sales & Marketing where she established a regional sales and marketing structure. At the hotel level, she also served as general manager and director of sales and marketing at Swissotel Atlanta Buckhead where she led the charge on creating forecasts, budgets and operational guidelines. Cannon also worked at several Holiday Inn properties in sales capacities.
Prior to joining IHG, Cannon served as the Deputy Commissioner of Tourism for the Georgia Department of Economic Development where she was responsible for establishing policies to drive revenue and job-creation in Georgia’s second largest industry. She began her career in the hospitality field in 1981 as a regional representative with the Georgia Department of Industry and Trade where she was the state liaison for 29 counties in North Georgia.
Cannon has received significant recognition in the hospitality industry, including being named by Travel Agent as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Travel. She also received the American Express Silver Plume Award for General Manager of the Year and IHG’s Development Partner of the Year Award.
