HotelWorld Expo & Conference recently announced Frederick Cerrone, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hotel Equities as the winner of the Hotelier of the Year Award, an award that recognizes an outstanding global leader as determined by the editors of Hotel & Motel Management, Hotel Design and Luxury Hotelier magazines. The award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the HotelWorld Global Hospitality & Design award committee. It will be presented at the awards ceremony held March 3, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With more than 40 years of hospitality experience, Fred Cerrone is a veteran in the area of hotel management. First starting as a desk clerk at the Boston Sheraton, he became the youngest general manager in Sheraton history at age 21. He was chosen to manage the first all-suites hotel in the United States and was twice recognized as “GM of the Year” by national franchises. He later co-founded Day Hospitality Group (DHG) to manage and develop hotels. In 2004, he purchased the management arm of DHG and started his own hotel management, development and consulting firm.
Cerrone re-launched the company under the Hotel Equities name and began strategic expansion that led to the company’s rapid growth to date. Between 2006 and 2008, the company increased the number of properties in the portfolio by fifty percent.
He is known in the industry as a man of great generosity, compassion, vision, integrity and wisdom. A dedicated mentor, Cerrone takes pride in the fact that seven of his associates have been named national General Manager of the Year by Marriott hotel brands.
He currently chairs the Fairfield Inn and Suites Franchise Advisory Council and serves as a member of the SpringHill Suites Franchise Advisory Council, both for Marriott International. He has displayed his commitment to philanthropic endeavors with InStep International, a nonprofit organization that provides missionary work around the world.
“The Hotelier of the Year award recognizes true leaders in the hospitality industry,” said Van V. Heffner, president & CEO, Nevada Hotel & Lodging association (NH&LA). “Fred Cerrone has the high distinction of being recognized by his colleagues and peers in the industry for his leadership, vision and exemplary contributions to the hospitality lodging and tourism industry.”
Cerrone holds an A.S. degree from Miami Dade College and an M.B.A. from Georgia State University. Last year he demonstrated his commitment to continuing education by returning to college to earn his M.B.A. He also installed a state-of-the-art training center at the Hotel Equities corporate headquarters where he personally teaches company classes on leadership and the Hotel Equities culture. Hotel Equities has the distinction of operating three training hotels for Marriott International.
A resident of Dunwoody, Georgia, he is member of Dunwoody Baptist Church and enjoys all sports (especially baseball), playing golf and reading. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Christine, and they are the parents of two grown daughters.
“The second annual HotelWorld Global Hospitality & Design award event will be enhanced by having such an exciting and worthy winner,” said Liz Crawford, show director of HotelWorld Expo & Conference. “There were many commendable applicants but the clear winner was Frederick Cerrone as our Hotelier of the Year. His dedication to the industry and beyond has set him apart from all others.”
