Latest accolade from Wallpaper magazine follows multi million dollar facelift

Zurich’s iconic luxury city resort, the Dolder Grand, has been honoured in the 2009 Design Awards by prestigious international travel and design magazine, Wallpaper.

The historic Zurich landmark transformed by world-renowned London architects Foster and Partners in a US$400 million facelift was voted 'Best New or Renovated Hotel'. The 4,000 square metre spa created by renowned American spa consultant Sylvia Sepielli was hailed as the "jewel in the crown, bringing back glamour to Zurich’s restored idol".

The Dolder Grand, which dates back to 1899 as a Curhaus health spa, has been showered with accolades since being reborn last year following a four-year conversion and renovation, with interior design by United Designers of London.

It collected the prize for 'Best architecture - Conversion of an existing building' in the European Hotel Design Awards 2008, and predicted to be one of the 'Top 15 hotels in the world to watch' in Travel + Leisure's (US) World’s Best Awards 2008. Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung ranked it 'Best Swiss City Hotel', and UK Tatler awarded it the Tatler Spa Award for Smartest Escape.

Meanwhile the hotel's signature fine dining venue, The Restaurant, was awarded 1 Michelin Star and 17 Gault Millau points. The Restaurant offers an innovative gourmet menu which Chef Fine Dining Heiko Nieder has based on light, modern dishes such as lobster with strawberries, beetroot and nasturtium, langoustines with peas, ham and vadouvan or sole with sorrel, poppy seed and vanilla.

Innovative building and design technology was combined with restoration of many original architectural features to their former glory at the luxury city resort (www.thedoldergrand.com) with unrivalled views of the city, lake and the Alps.

It now features 173 exceptionally luxurious rooms and suites within the historic Main Building and two entirely new extensions, the Golf and Spa Wings, which seamlessly embrace the historic hotel in a fusion of tradition and modernity.

European and Japanese influences shape the unique ‘temple dedicated to well-being’ spa which features a black swimming pool with panoramic alpine views, state of the art gym, movement and mind-body studios, 19 treatment rooms, spa cafe and two spa suites for exclusive, private relaxation.

The Dolder Grand also introduced a new state-of-the-art ballroom, banqueting and seminar facilities including the new Gallery offering a space of more than 700 square metres.

Superb recreational facilities include tennis courts and a golf course, and the Bar is a black marble masterpiece with sweeping staircase, gold beaded curtains and an unusual ocean of lights creating a unique atmosphere.

Now positioned as a top-ranking international luxury city resort, The Dolder Grand is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and Swiss Deluxe Hotels.
