The Peninsula will raise the bar for New York spas with the unveiling of The Peninsula Spa by ESPA in December 2008. The chic and elegant new spa will feature a stunning collection of 12 treatment rooms, including a spacious Private Spa Suite; men’s and women’s private relaxation lounges; Asian tea lounge; and changing rooms featuring luxurious thermal experiences. A comprehensive menu of treatments designed by ESPA uniquely reflects a fusion of Asian, Ayurvedic and European therapies, emphasizing a back-to-basics approach with authentic treatments delivered by highly-trained therapists. A glass-enclosed pool, fitness facility and sun terrace with panoramic city views complete the wellness experience, providing the ultimate urban resort destination.

The Peninsula New York’s Spa is the latest spa to open in the very successful group-wide partnership between The Peninsula Hotels and ESPA, following the launch of spas in Hong Kong and Bangkok in 2006, Chicago and Tokyo in 2007, and Beijing in 2008. The group partnered with leading international spa company ESPA, headed by renowned spa authority Susan Harmsworth, to develop the ultimate in spa concepts.

ESPA therapists set the benchmark for worldwide spas in terms of skill, training, service and quality treatments, as no other spa has a team of therapists who undergo such an intensive, comprehensive and lengthy training program. They must be fully qualified before joining ESPA, and must then attend ESPA’s renowned rigorous and intensive ten week training covering treatment and product knowledge, holistic treatment training, advanced spa concepts and ESPA’s signature five star customer journey.

Design Inspired by Nature
Located on the 21st floor of The Peninsula New York, the 35,000 square foot tri-level Spa was designed by Alexandra Champalimaud of Champalimaud & Associates. Inspired by the grandeur of nature, the centerpiece of Champalimaud’s design is brought to life as guests enter the reception
area of the Spa and are greeted by an inspiring three-story curving staircase accompanied by soaring teak figurative tree sculptures. The simple yet dramatic design serves as a modern expression of “Organic Form” - a concept manifested throughout the Spa. Bathed in light from above, the individual tree forms are designed to root and orient spa guests on an ascending journey of liberation, deep calm and balance.

Designer Champalimaud’s theme of “Organic Form” is further enhanced throughout the Spa with rich deep tones that are present in the use of marble, warm woods and supple hues of cinnabar, amber, and charcoal. Furniture pieces are designed with respect for natural forms with well defined organic lines and geometric forms. Wood seating at reception and in the Asian tea lounge are sculptural pieces by Hudson Furniture - carved by hand from salvaged acacia trees.

Separate men’s and women’s relaxation rooms provide the ultimate refuge for spa guests. Individual relaxation beds feature down comforters with Frette linens, personal sound systems and lighting. The emphasis on individual discretion is maintained by a sculptural arrangement of lit screens made of translucent art; each a dream-like view of nature captured by New England artist and photographer Clifton Jaeger. The Asian tea lounge serves as an intimate area for guests to experience the The Peninsula Tea Ceremony.

The Spa’s changing rooms each feature a Thermal Suite, a range of heating and cooling experiences designed to cleanse the skin, relax and prepare the body and mind for the treatments to follow. Comprised of an aromatherapy Finish steam room, sauna, ice fountain and “experience” shower, the focal point of the Thermal Suite is the ice fountain, set against a backdrop of 24 karat gold mosaic by Bisazza.

To ensure an environment of tranquility, all treatment rooms have been designed to eliminate sound and competing scents from other rooms, and air-conditioning systems are isolated to minimize all potential distractions. Seven treatment rooms are multifunctional to accommodate facial, massage and body treatments. The Private Spa Suite is the ultimate personal Spa experience for couples, friends, or family wishing to retreat in total privacy. Featuring city views, the Spa Suite offers a luxurious steam shower, and a KOHLER® double whirlpool bath featuring chromatherapy lighting.

Super Active Advanced Facials
The Peninsula Spa by ESPA will be the first spa in the United States to debut three new advanced facial treatments designed to address specific skin conditions and provide outstanding, visible results. Each facial is results-driven and combines Super Active products that take a scientific
approach with specialized massage techniques to deliver powerful skin benefits with both immediate and long-term results in a luxuriously natural way.

Peninsula Signature Ceremonies
ESPA has created a collection of bespoke treatments exclusively for The Peninsula Spa in New York. This personal spa experience pairs outstanding treatments that uniquely reflect a fusion of Asian, Ayurvedic and European therapies designed to achieve outstanding results for energy, tranquility and balance. The exclusive Peninsula Ceremonies are elegant treatments derived from Peninsula destinations around the world, and feature a newly launched range of products called Simply Peninsula. Therapeutic essential oils and botanical extracts used throughout Asia for centuries for their calming, restorative and energizing properties have been specially selected to create this sophisticated collection of products.

The signature Peninsula New York Ceremony is the Deep Tissue Experience, a uniquely powerful two-hour treatment that includes a therapeutic massage with a vigorous, free-flowing joint release technique, which replaces stressful tension with immense calm and tranquility. The Yang Soother and Yin Uplifter, a signature of The Peninsula Hong Kong, is designed to help restore balance to the body and mind based on guests’ unique needs.

Pool and Fitness Center
Wellness abounds for hotel and spa guests on the Fitness level, featuring a newly renovated workout facility and glass-enclosed pool that features panoramic views of the city from the 22nd floor. The Fitness Center offers the latest in cardiovascular and strength training equipment and a tranquil sun-lit movement studio. The serene, glass-enclosed pool boasts a sleek décor that features teak columns set against a cool black tile floor and poolside dining offering healthy Naturally Peninsula cuisine. A wrap-around sun terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue offers the ideal location for outdoor lounging. Spa guests who book two hours of treatment time may enjoy full use of the fitness center, pool and sun terrace.

A limited number of private memberships are also available for The Peninsula Spa. Membership offers ultimate combination of a peaceful spa with an all-inclusive fitness component, establishing it as a destination for New Yorkers and travelers alike.

The Peninsula Spa by ESPA is a vital facet of Peninsula Wellness – a program designed to touch every aspect of a guest’s lifestyle, both during their stay and beyond.
