PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Lorenzo Creighton, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM MIRAGE's New York-New York Hotel & Casino, has been named recipient of the prestigious Trumpet Award for his contributions in business. Creighton is the first and only African American to lead a property on the Las Vegas Strip. He also is distinguished for helping establish the gaming industry in the State of Mississippi.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be counted among the luminaries who comprise the Trumpet Awards' list of achievers," said Creighton. "This award is a nod to the growing presence of African Americans in the gaming industry."

According to MGM MIRAGE Chairman and CEO Terry Lanni, the award recognizes the achievements of a deserving professional. "Lorenzo's depth and range of experiences provide an extraordinary skill set for leading a complex enterprise such as New York-New York Hotel & Casino," said Lanni. "He is a natural leader whose interpersonal communication style does not demand respect, rather, his mere presence commands respect. We are proud that one of our best leaders is being honored by the Trumpet Awards."

With more than sixteen years in the gaming industry, Creighton's professional background is quite diverse. He has been a high school teacher, an attorney, and a judge. These experiences ultimately led him to a job in an untraditional field as a gaming regulator.

Representative Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) credits Creighton for his work in establishing the Mississippi Gaming Commission. "Gaming has benefited the South in crucial economic ways, and much of that impact is due to Lorenzo Creighton," said Rep. Thompson.

"I've had several careers," Creighton said. "Each prepared me for the opportunity that I enjoy today."

Prior to assuming his role as President of New York-New York Hotel and Casino in April 2005, Creighton held executive positions at Lady Luck in Natchez, Miss.; The President Casino in St Louis, Mo.; and Bally's Casino in New Orleans. He took the helm as a casino president in 2002 when he joined the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas, where he successfully led the property through much of its renovation efforts.

According to Creighton, overseeing operations of a hotel and casino is one of the most exciting experiences of his career. "I love the competition of gaming and the marketing of it. You have to come up with creative ideas to keep the operations going and growing," he said. "At the same time, there is great reward in keeping a team challenged and motivated to deliver the best customer service possible."

Annually the TRUMPET AWARDS honors African-American achievements in diverse fields including law, business, politics, medicine and entertainment. Honorees of the 2006 Trumpet Awards are: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Stevie Wonder, Danny Bakewell, Usher, Reverend C.T. Vivian, Justice Leah Ward Sears, Dr. Bobby Jones, Vivica A. Fox, Lorenzo Creighton and Dr. Keith Black. The 2006 Trumpet Awards will broadcast on TV One, and tapes of the ceremony will be made available to public schools throughout the country.
