Voting for the 2008/2009 edition of The Miele Guide, Asia's first independent and authoritative restaurant guide has closed. From 15 May 2008 to 31 July 2008, several thousand people from around the world logged onto The Miele Guide's website and cast their votes for what they believe are Asia's very best restaurants. In addition, invitations were sent out to over 1,500 highly-regarded F&B professionals and respected foodies in Asia to join The Miele Guide's Special Jury. Jury members also voted for what they believe are Asia's best restaurants in the month of July 2008.
To make the voting easier, a shortlist of restaurants was put together earlier this year. This list was compiled from nominations from 84 of Asia's most respected restaurant critics and food writers. Each journalist was asked to nominate what he or she felt were the best 20 restaurants in his or her own country. Voting, however, was not limited to restaurants on the published shortlist. All voters were allowed to nominate restaurants they felt were deserving.
During the month of August 2008, The Miele Guide's editorial team, helped by a team of Contributing Editors spread across Asia, will assess the results of the surveys and conduct final evaluations to determine which restaurants will be listed in the 2008/2009 edition of The Miele Guide. This edition will profile approximately 300 restaurants from across the region, categorised by country, city and cuisine. In addition, a numerically ranked list of Asia's Top 20 Restaurants will be published. Each of these restaurants will be profiled in-depth.
The results of Asia's Top 20 Restaurants will be unveiled at The Miele Guide Dinner, hosted at the Grand Hyatt Singapore on 31 October 2008. The 2008/2009 edition of The Miele Guide will be launched at this chic gala event, which will be attended by a veritable who¡¦s who of Asia's F&B scene, plus some very special guests from outside the region. This dinner will celebrate all the chefs and restaurateurs whose establishments have been selected to appear in the 2008/2009 edition.
The Miele Guide will herald a new standard in the Asian culinary sphere and will set a benchmark for measuring the best restaurants in the region when launched. The first edition evaluates restaurants in 16 Asian countries¡XBrunei, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Sustainable Sources for Paper
Ate Media, publisher of The Miele Guide, has confirmed that The Miele Guide will be printed on FSC Certified Paper. This means that the paper has been purchased entirely from Forest Stewardship Council approved sources. The Forest Stewardship Council was created in 1993 as a result of the Earth Summit to change the dialogue about and the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. FSC sets forth principles, criteria, and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns. The FSC standards represent the world's strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes. Like the forestry profession itself, the FSC system includes stakeholders with a diverse array of perspectives on what represents a well-managed and sustainable forest. FSC standards for forest management have now been applied in over 57 countries around the world. By using only FSC Certified Paper, The Miele Guide strives to be an environmentally conscious and responsible publishing project.
The Miele Guide Culinary Scholarship Programme
The Miele Guide has committed to allocate proceeds from the worldwide sales of the Guide, including proceeds from any corporate sales, towards funding scholarships for young and talented chefs from Asia. Funds from the sales of the 2008/2009 edition will go towards two new scholarships, The Miele Guide-At-Sunrice Scholarships. One scholarship will be awarded to a citizen or permanent resident of one of the Asian countries evaluated in the Guide with the exception of Singapore and the other will be awarded to a Singapore citizen or permanent resident. The Miele Guide Culinary Scholarship Programme has been created in conjunction with the Guide's launch to promote formal culinary education and to further excellence and continuous achievement in the culinary field in Asia. Through these scholarships, two young and talented chefs will have the opportunity to attend the Diploma in Culinary Craft and Service Excellence (DCCSE) course at the renowned At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy (At-Sunrice). In future years, as revenue grows, more scholarships will be created and announced.
The Miele Guide is published by Ate Media Pte Ltd and sponsored by Miele, a German manufacturer of premium and innovative cooking appliances for the home. While a naming sponsor of the Guide, Miele will not exert any influence over the selection and judging process that determines which restaurants appear in The Miele Guide.
Further underlining its independence, neither the Guide nor its contributors accept any advertising, sponsorship or free meals from any of the restaurants reviewed.
