Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) has been recognized by Black Enterprise magazine as one of “40 Best Companies for Diversity” for the fourth consecutive year. Marriott was one of two lodging companies to make the list. The magazine said that the companies identified in the special report demonstrated strength and outperformed their peers in one or more of four key categories: supplier diversity, senior management, board involvement, and employee base.
"We are pleased to be recognized again this year by Black Enterprise as one of the best companies for diversity,” said Jimmie W. Paschall, global diversity officer and senior vice president, external affairs for Marriott International, Inc. “We know that the rich diversity present within our organization is our competitive advantage. This recognition affirms that our strategies and initiatives in this area are key to sustaining our leadership position."
Marriott focuses its diversity efforts in the areas of: supplier diversity, workforce, hotel ownership, and diverse customers. In 2003, Marriott’s Board of Directors established the Committee for Excellence, chaired today by board member Debra L. Lee, chairman and CEO of BET Networks, to monitor the progress of the company’s diversity initiatives. Last year, Marriott spent 13.6%, or $478 million, with minority- and women-owned suppliers. There are more than 400 Marriott hotels owned, operated or under development by women or minorities. And, of Marriott’s U.S. workforce, more than 61 percent are minorities and 55 percent are women.
The company continues to be recognized for its achievements for helping its employees to live, grow and be rewarded. So far this year, Marriott was named one of the “Top Companies for Diversity” by DiversityInc, one of the “Top 10 Companies for Executive Women” by the National Association for Female Executives, and one of “The 50 Best Companies for Supplier Diversity” by Hispanic Enterprise magazine.
The special report on the best companies for diversity is featured in the July issue of Black Enterprise magazine.
