The Rezidor Hotel Group considerably increases the number of eco-labelled hotels and strengthens its proactive, long term orientated commitment to the environment. By the end of this year 50 more hotels will be certified by acknowledged third party labels: Seven more Radisson SAS hotels in the UK will gain certification from the Green Tourism Business Scheme, seven more properties in Ireland will secure the Green Hospitality Award, 29 more hotels in Scandinavia will obtain the Nordic Swan Eco-label, and seven more properties in France, Tunisia and Benelux will achieve the Green Key. “These markets with well established independent labels are in our focus”, comments Catherine Rubbens, Director Responsible Business of Rezidor. “We see strong demands from the markets itself and from our hotels for eco-certifications, and do believe that these labels are a more and more important part within our overall Responsible Business Programme.”
Group wide, Rezidor already operates 31 eco-labelled hotels which concentrate on aspects such as concrete savings, better indoor environment, waste management, energy efficiency, environmental training of employees and informing guests. Available labels are the Nordic Swan Eco-label, the Norwegian Miljøfyrtårnet, the Austrian eco-label, the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the Green Hospitality Award, the Green Key, the Green Globe, the Golden Leaf Green Certification from Chinese Hotel Rating Star Committee, the Ecodynamic Enterprises for Brussels, and the Swedish Miljödiplomering.
“While preparing an eco-audit some properties need to make adjustments in order to comply with the certification”, explains Catherine Rubbens; “but in general Rezidor’s Responsible Business Programme prepares them very well for the full process.”
Rezidor was one of the first hotel companies in the world to have a dedicated programme for Responsible Business and trains all hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa – comprising the responsibility for health & safety, the respect for social & ethical issues within the company and a reduced impact on the environment. The group is also one of the first hotel companies to offer all guests carbon offsetting possibilities. For its engagement Rezidor has received several awards including the Worldwide Hospitality Award in 2004, and is currently a member and Chair of the Executive Committee of the prestigious IBLF’s Tourism Partnership. In September 2007, Rezidor established a new partnership with World Childhood Foundation, a charity organisation founded in 1999 by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden.
