Soneva Gili in the Maldives recently helped surrounding island communities to gain access to quality health care in a weeklong medical expedition around Male’ Atoll. An estimated one thousand residents from seven islands were consulted during the seven day expedition between May 17 to 23, 2008. During the expedition free medical consultations, sponsored prescriptions and basic health education were provided to residents.
The Soneva Gili Medical Camp started on the island of Thulusdhoo in the North Male’ Atoll, followed by Himmafushi, Huraa and Dhiffushi islands respectively. The camp then headed to the South Male’ Atoll to Guraidhoo and Gulhi, and finished on the island of Maafushi.
Soneva Gili sponsored a portion of the medical prescriptions distributed during the expedition, and hosted Dr. Deepa Janardhanan and Dr. Nilha Raj, an assistant professor of pediatrics and a gynecological consultant from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), India. In addition to the two doctors, several Soneva Gili hosts volunteered their time to join the weeklong expedition to promote a number of vital health awareness issues including neonatal care, maternal health and Thalassaemia.
Under the broader umbrella of corporate social responsibility initiatives, Soneva Gili and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives recognise the importance of promoting quality health care in local communities. Both resorts actively contribute to a number of medical institutions and to a variety of social causes in the surrounding community and elsewhere in the Maldives and abroad.
