The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) last night announced Six Senses Resorts & Spas as the winner in the prestigious Global Tourism Business Category of the 2008 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. The awards were presented at the gala dinner for the 8th Global Travel & Tourism Summit on 21 April in Dubai, and recognise best practices in sustainable tourism development all over the world.
With over 150 high quality award applications from more than 40 countries being entered, the awards are recognized as one of the most renowned environmental awards in the tourism and hospitality industry. Six Senses was the only finalist in its category to be nominated for a second consecutive year.
In announcing the awards at the official ceremony, Costas Christ, chairman of judges of the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, said, "Twenty years ago sustainable tourism was just an idea, now it is entering the Travel & Tourism mainstream as more companies embrace new innovations demonstrating environmentally-friendly operations, a commitment to safeguarding the cultural and natural heritage of our planet, and addressing poverty alleviation through enlightened business practices. The winners of the 2008 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are helping to lead the way forward at a transformative moment in the history of modern travel."
Accepting the award was Six Senses Resorts & Spas Founder, Chairman & CEO, Mr Sonu Shivdasani. In a speech of appreciation, Shivdasani said, “It is a privilege and honour for Six Senses to be recognized for our ongoing best practices in sustainable tourism development. Six Senses Resorts & Spas achievement in being recognised as the winner further supports the uncompromised commitment to our core purpose, which is: To create innovative and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment.” I share the award with the hosts at all of our properties managed under the brands Soneva, Six Senses Hideaway, Six Senses Latitude and Evason, plus Six Senses Spa and Six Senses Destination Spa.
The judging process included a team of 11 international judges who selected 3 finalists in each award category, followed by an on-site inspection visit of all finalists. The winners were then selected from among the finalists by a panel of four judges.
Other award winners at the event were Blackstone Valley, USA - Destination Award, Ecotourism Australia - Conservation Award, and RARE / La Ruta Moskitia, Honduras - Investor in People Award.
