Barely a year and a half after Banyan Tree Holdings Limited (“Banyan Tree” or the “Group”) saw its debut on the Singapore Exchange, its Executive Chairman and founder Mr. Ho Kwon Ping has been bestowed the honour of Chief Executive Officer of the Year at the Singapore Corporate Awards 2008. In a glittering ceremony held at the Raffles City Convention Centre on 20 February 2008, Mr. Ho accepted the award in the category of companies with market capitalisation of over S$500 million. Also in the same evening, Banyan Tree received the Gold Award for Best Annual Report in the Newly Listed Company category.
Mr. Ho said, “It is a great honour to receive this award. A CEO’s job is not just to manage effectively and create profits, but to also lead and inspire all stakeholders towards a collective and compelling vision. Banyan Tree is a small and young enterprise. But we have big dreams of being a global player in our chosen niche, and today, with our footprint in virtually every continent through some 50 development projects; there is no turning back on this deeply fulfilling journey.”
The debut on the Singapore Exchange in June 2006 heralded a new chapter in its history, with the Group undertaking aggressive expansion in emerging regions such as China and Middle East. In addition, Mr. Ho has actively promoted and exercised considerable influence in the travel industry, particularly in matters of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the region.
Mr. Ho summed up in his acceptance speech, “As business leaders we have to not only embrace, but continually lead by personal example. This is in order to inspire the notion that the pursuit of business can be a noble enterprise, and that business can, if morally driven and passionately executed, be a positive force in making this a world of greater equality and prosperity for the community.”
The CEO of the Year Award recognizes excellence in the CEO’s leadership in shareholder communication, corporate governance, talent and change management, vision and strategic capability. The Annual Report Award gives recognition to companies that demonstrate a high standard of disclosure, financial reporting presentation, as well as relevance to shareholders.
The Singapore Corporate Awards are organised by The Business Times and supported by the Singapore Exchange. Now in its third year, the SCA honours Singapore Exchange-listed companies and individuals who exemplify the best in governance and corporate disclosure standards.
