This is probably one of the most critical challenges facing the travel industry in the coming years. How do you invent a future for yourself and maintain your business in a more sustainable and nature-friendly way?

As the demand for responsible tourism grows, the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), which will celebrate its 30th anniversary, invites travel, tourism, and hospitality professionals as well as industrialists and politicians. All will gather from May 1-4 in Dubai to explore innovative trends in sustainable tourism and identify growth strategies in key verticals.

Technologies at the heart of the debates

For the event, more than 150 speakers (up 27%), 2,000 exhibitors and 34,000 visitors from around the world are expected by the organizers. “We intend to use the 30 edition of ATM to address one of the most important challenges facing our industry, in line with our theme “Committing to Net Zero”. The increase in attendance at this year's show reflects, not only the seriousness with which tourism professionals and policymakers are taking sustainability into account, but also the growing demand for leisure and business travel in the Middle East and beyond,” says Danielle Curtis, Director of Middle East Exhibitions at MTA, at the outset.

On this occasion, the show has thought big and intends to meet all expectations and curiosities. In addition to the many exhibitors who will present their solutions to decarbonize the economy and their activities, numerous round tables and conferences will be organized around themes as varied as the environmental impact of luxury hotels and the most effective methods of offsetting carbon dioxide emissions, but also the price of sustainable luxury.

Others will explore how modern innovations, such as artificial intelligence, big data and Web 3, enable smooth operations, professional development, payments, accessibility, sustainable travel and improved customer experience.

A market in full expansion

Participants who should be particularly pleased with the return of the ILTM Arabia 2023. This event, which will take place on the second and third days of the show, will be entirely dedicated to luxury and devoted to high-end destinations, superior accommodation, and customized tourism experiences.

A booming sector in the Middle East and particularly in the Gulf States, with the massive investments made by the Emirati host and Saudi Arabia in particular. Observers estimate that luxury tourism should be worth 30.5 billion dollars in the United Arab Emirates, 27 billion in Saudi Arabia, 17 billion in Kuwait and 13 billion in Qatar.

This market is even more buoyant, as 61% of UAE residents say they are willing to pay more for more eco-friendly and sustainable tourism experiences, and the number of tourists who have stayed at a sustainable luxury hotel in the last three years has increased by 50% over this period.

Prelude to COP 28

To accompany its visitors and exhibitors, ATM will deliver a guide with a selection of tips to limit the environmental impact of their activities. The show will also be marked by the return of the ATM Travel Tech Stage, which will present how cutting-edge innovations, including artificial intelligence, metaverse, crypto-currencies and big data, promote environmentally friendly tourism.

To conclude these four days of exchanges, several trophies for the most innovative and virtuous companies will be awarded. One of them will distinguish the start-up having presented the best project in terms of sustainable technology solutions. One of the exhibitors will be awarded a prize for their attention to environmental impact in the design of their booth, as well as for their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.

“We look forward to learning about their actions and initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality in their respective tourism markets, as our industry comes together to showcase the cutting-edge innovations and solutions that are driving the next generation of sustainable travel in the Middle East and beyond,” Danielle Curtis is already excited.

While this 2023 edition is full of promise, it is also part of the Emirate's agenda and a prelude to COP 28, which Dubai will host next November.
