The International Market for Real Estate Professionals brings together nearly 20,000 participants from all over the world every year in Cannes. The highlight of the show is the MIPIM Awards, which celebrate “the industry's most useful, sustainable and visionary projects”.
This year's, MIPIM focused on the decarbonization of the sector, with the "Road to Zero", a new space dedicated to the transformation of the built environment towards a more sustainable model.
It is therefore no surprise that the Awards recognize a "Commitment to sustainability". The key criteria for the 2023 Awards are:
- Overall sustainability
- Integration of the project in its environment and community
- Quality of the user experience
- Economic contribution
- Originality of the concept
- Architectural qualities
The four finalists in the "Best Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Project" category are:
Banyan Tree AlUla Hotel, AlUla, Saudi Arabia
The resort covers 10,000 m² in the Ashar Valley in AlUla, and features 47 tented suites, 2 garden pavilions, 2 restaurants and a spa with an outdoor pool.
The design was entrusted to the Parisian agency AW² architecture & interiors, led by Reda Amalou and Stéphanie Ledoux, commissioned by the promoters of the project, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), in partnership with the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (AFALULA).
The engineering is signed by EGIS, and the AW² agency worked in partnership with the local architect GAJ, Godwin Austen Johnson.
“The design priorities the preservation of natural beauty and the rich heritage of the site while supporting the nation’s long-term touristic, cultural, and economic goals for the region” emphasizes the AW² agency.
NIKO Seaside Resort Crete Hotel - M gallery, Agios Nikolaos Crete, Greece
The adults-only Cretan hotel has 141 rooms and suites, most of which have their own infinity pool overlooking Mirabello Bay. There are also three restaurants and two swimming pools.
The project was designed by Danish architect 3XN, commissioned by the developer HINES.
"Hotel Niko transforms one of the old, mid-century resorts into a destination fit for the future" say the architects from 3XN.
Lanserhof Sylt, Sylt, Germany
The futuristic hotel, located on an island between the dunes, covers an area of 20,000 m². It has 68 rooms and a 5,000 m² medical and wellness centre.
It was designed by the Düsseldorf architects Ingenhoven associates on behalf of the developer LHS Grund 5 GmbH.
“A key focus of the building project is the careful harmonization of the architecture with the surrounding dune landscape to avoid any negative impact on the protected landscape and wildlife. The idea was to create a particularly sustainable and healthy building complex in which guests can recuperate and re-energize in harmony with nature” say the architects.
Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing, China
283 rooms and suites are set against the peaceful backdrop of the Yongding River and Shijingshan.
A grandiose project entrusted to the architects of the Milanese firm Lissoni & Partners, Lissoni Casal Ribeiro, by the developer Beijing Shougang Construction Group Co.
“The hotel is constructed within an abandoned industrial area and was inaugurated on the occasion of the Beijing Winter Olympics” say the architects.
The Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 16 March at 6.30 pm on the stage of the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
