Bali is renowned for its rich traditions that permeate every aspect of life. One of the enduring legacies passed down through generations is its traditional cuisine.

Blessed by nature’s abundance, the Balinese prepare dishes as an expression of gratitude to the Divine. These traditional recipes hold profound significance within the community, often created as ceremonial offerings or to mark important milestones in life.

Embracing the spirit of preserving local traditions, HOSHINOYA Bali offers a traditional cooking class, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the authentic Balinese way of life. The experience begins with a morning visit to a bustling local market, followed by hands-on cooking guided by the hotel staff, and culminates in savoring the prepared dishes.

This unique journey not only allows guests to connect with the local community but also inspires them with the wisdom of Balinese culture through its cuisine. Beyond learning how to prepare traditional dishes, guests take home a meaningful experience that they can recreate and enjoy anytime.

Feature 1: A Morning of Discovery – Visiting a Traditional Market

The journey begins early in the morning (around 7 am) with a guided visit to a bustling traditional Balinese market, where guests can immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of local life. Accompanied by our kitchen staff, guests will explore colorful stalls brimming with the freshest ingredients—from fragrant spices and tropical fruits to exotic vegetables and herbs.

This market visit provides a unique opportunity to connect with local vendors, learn about Bali’s culinary staples, and gain insight into the traditions that shape Balinese cuisine. It’s not just about observing but truly experiencing what it means to be part of the local community.

Feature 2: Cooking Class Workshop

After gathering the finest ingredients, guests return to HOSHINOYA Bali and step into our semi open-air cooking pavilion, nestled amidst lush tropical gardens.

Under the guidance of our chef, they will learn to prepare traditional Balinese dishes, including Ayam Betutu (spiced steamed chicken), Jukut Urap (vegetable salad), Pesan Be Pasih (steamed and grilled fish), Sate Lilit (minced fish satay), Jukut Pusuh (banana blossom soup), and Jaje Injin (steamed black sticky rice). The class emphasizes traditional techniques to preserve the authentic taste of Balinese cuisine.

Feature 3: Lunch – A Feast to Remember

Following the cooking session, guests will sit down to enjoy their lunch and savor the authentic Balinese flavors they’ve created. This dining experience offers a moment of reflection on the culinary journey, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the essence of Balinese cuisine while enjoying the serene beauty of the resort’s surroundings.
