Competing were Giacomo Battafarano, Manager Director Area South Italy Rocco Forte Hotels, and Cristiano Cabutti, GM JW Marriott Venice Resort and Spa.

The ‘Italian Hotel General Manager of the Year “ award is presented to a hotel general manager who is a member of the EHMA Italian delegation for outstanding professional work during the calendar year,” explains National Delegate Ezio A. Indiani, GM Hotel Principe di Savoia Milan.

The winner must have made a tangible contribution to the financial, operational and innovative growth of the image and prestige of the managed hotels, also taking into account his or her professional career and dedication to the Association. His visionary, engaging and results-oriented leadership style and his exceptional capacity for innovation make Giuseppe De Martino an absolute excellence in the industry, amply deserving of recognition as Italy's best General Manager of the year’.

Giuseppe De Martino's strategic vision has enabled The St.Regis Rome to anticipate industry trends and constantly innovate its offerings, maintaining the company's high standards of quality despite a very high competitive environment. The strong customer orientation has allowed him to build a corporate culture focused on service excellence, guaranteeing a unique and personalised experience.

This has led not only to strong customer loyalty but also to the company's impeccable reputation. De Martino has also produced significant growth in turnover and the creation of lasting value for stakeholders, demonstrating great excellence in financial management as well.

However, Giuseppe De Martino has added to the aforementioned skills by having been able to keep his management level high during the pandemic period, when he left the level of customer service unchanged, despite the obvious difficulties of the moment, making a difficult choice that nevertheless allowed him to keep his customers satisfied and therefore intact.

The nominees for the EHMA ‘Italian Hotel General Manager of the Year 2024Award were all of a very high calibre and met the requirements.

The career of Giuseppe De Martino

After more than ten years of international experience in some of the world's most iconic properties in top destinations such as New York, Amsterdam, Paris and London, De Martino returned to Italy in 2008, where he held top management positions, gaining a 360-degree vision in hotel management working with several Owning Companies and Asset Managers.

De Martino has been General Manager of The St. Regis Rome since March 2018. Previously, from 2013 to 2018, he was General Manager of the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center Rome (now Cardo Roma, Autograph Collection) and from 2008 to 2013 General Manager of The Westin Europa & Regina Venice (The St. Regis Venice since 2018).

Since 2020 he has been Marriott East Italy Business Council Chair, responsible for the coordination of all activities in terms of sustainability, inclusion, access to employment opportunities for the most vulnerable groups and support of the communities in which the hotels operate 34 Marriott properties, both Managed and Franchise and as many as 16 brands.

After having been since 2018 a Member of the Executive Board of Unindustria - Tourism and Leisure Section, Lazio, since April 2024 he has been its President. Since the 2018-19 academic year he has been an external lecturer at Luiss Business School, Rome Master in Luxury Management, Focus on Luxury Hospitality

An EHMA member since 2016, he actively participates in Association meetings and projects. Ḕ member of the EHMA Italy Institutional Relations Committee and served as Mentor in the 3rd and 5th cycle of the ‘Mentor Me’ project.

The other contenders for the Italian Hotel General Manager of the Year 2024 Award are:

Giacomo Battafarano, Managing Director for the Southern Italy Area of Rocco Forte Hotels: the Hotel de Russie - Rome and Masseria Torre Maizza - Puglia; in Sicily: Villa Igea, Verdura Resort and Rocco Forte Private Villas

Prior to joining Rocco Forte Hotels Battafarano worked in a wide range of destinations and cities, including London, Portugal, Maldives and Egypt, and multinationals such as Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, Macdonald, Exclusive Hotel Collection, Marriott. During this time, he has been involved in major projects including the supervision of some extensive renovations, the relaunch and rebranding of two hotels and the launch of Rocco Forte Private Villas in Sicily, without forgetting the golf asset that earned him the nomination as best golf resort in Italy and second best in Europe. Customer orientation is his main focus. By creating good and harmonious working conditions, he succeeds in creating a team that embraces the ‘art of service’.

An EHMA member since 2016, he actively participates in association activities. He participated as a Mentor in the fifth edition of the ‘Mentor Me’ project.

Cristiano Cabutti, GM JW Marriott Venice Resort and Spa

Since 2020 General Manager of the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa located on the Isola delle Rose in Venice, with the aim of reopening the resort after its closure due to the pandemic, he has repositioned it both in terms of business mix and perception of luxury, restored the team spirit and motivation of the team by guiding it to the achievement of business and financial objectives.

As Sales Area Director of JW Marriott from 2017 to 2020, Cabutti oversaw the commercial management of 56 Marriott properties in the Mediterranean region, ensuring relevant strategic and financial results. In parallel, he contributed as a consultant to international talent development in Marriott EMEA, working with ten General Managers.

A member since 2022, he managed the financial aspect of the 50th EHMA international event in Venice in 2024. Since 2023, he has been a member of the Mentor Me project committee, contributing significantly to the success of the project. Ḕ was himself Mentor of the 5th ‘Mentor Me’ cycle.

The prize jury was composed of: Magda Antonioli, Bocconi University Milan; Gianfranco Battisti, LUISS Business School; Antonio Caneva, Publisher, Job in Tourism; Flavio Ghiringhelli, Country Manager Emirates Italy; Ivana Jelinic, Managing Director ENIT; Marina Lalli, National President of Federturismo Confindustria; Paride Marini Elisei, Studio Notarile Marini Roma; Martino Merigo, Quirinale Press and Communication Office; Massimo Nava, Editorialist Corriere della Sera; EHMA Italia through the single vote of the delegation represented the internal juror.

EHMA - European Hotel Managers Association was founded in Rome in 1974 by a group of hotel General Managers of undisputed professional ethics with the desire to maintain and enhance the image of the hotel heritage.
