The ten nominees include four hotels from Germany, two from Austria and one each from Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Hungary. Five of the hotels are new constructions, some of which are in city centre areas which were undergoing transformation, and others are located in natural surroundings.
Two of the nominees replace previous hotels and have been created with up-to-date architecture after a process of demolition, and three of the nominees are the result of revitalisation and conversion carried out by repurposing existing properties from other types of use.
Andreas Martin, Jury Chairman: “The field of applicants was international and highly heterogeneous. It has rarely been such a close race as this year with regard to the quality of the entries, which ranged from spectacular architecture in highly built-up city centre locations, through hotel buildings that have been thoughtfully and sustainably integrated into a natural background, to former office buildings which have been efficiently repurposed into hotels.”
The expert jury with a total of 18 members is made up of representatives from the fields of architecture, hotel management, hotel development, financing, interior design and technical building installations, along with representatives from the media and academia.
196+ forum Munich considers the interplay between the following criteria to be vital to the selection of the nominees
- architecture and design (innovation)
- integration into the project environment (destination)
- sustainability and technical innovation (future)
- the originality of the concept (creativity)
- cost-effectiveness (investment)
What the members of the jury say about the ten nominees:
Dr Renée Nicole Wagner, Corporate Director ESG & Quality Management at Orascom Hotels Management: “It’s impressive to see what the hotels applying this year have already achieved when it comes to ESG. And they are doing so with a great deal of passion, authenticity and commitment. Whether we are talking about no-waste concepts, sustainable construction methods, reusing available materials, integrating existing resources or the social impact, it’s great to see how ESG is already being put into practice.”
Daniel Schneider, Senior Partner and Head of Development at monoplan: “Exiting projects creating new destinations that focus on sustainability and medical wellness, as well as new products and concepts in established cities and destinations, round off the field for this year’s nominees.”
