The hotel recently secured a deal with Union Pay, the Chinese payment card, so guest’s transactions can be processed from mainland China. It also employs a number of Chinese speaking staff across different areas of the hotel. There are both Cantonese and Mandarin speaking therapists at the award winning ESPA Life at Corinthia spa and a Mandarin speaking sommelier in Massimo Restaurant & Oyster Bar, receptionist at front of house, in-room dining waiter and Assistant Restaurant Manager in the British restaurant The Northall.
Aside from practicalities, Corinthia London is also attracting Chinese guests by ensuring their personal needs are looked after. A selection of fine teas and kettle are placed in their room on arrival so they can continue the Chinese tradition of tea drinking throughout their stay. Similarly traditional Chinese breakfast items are available on request. CCTV (China’s state television broadcaster) is also included on the TV channel list and in-language papers, The Chinese Weekly and Sing Tao Daily are available complimentary.
To attract the Chinese luxury traveller, Corinthia London has employed a dedicated Chinese sales executive. Based at the London property, Ivy Jenkins was born in Beijing and has worked in the hospitality industry across the world for a number of years.
“It is important for Chinese guests to know that someone in the hotel is looking after them during their stay. They often call me seeking advice and recommendations on where to visit or where to shop” says Ivy. Corinthia London’s personal approach has paid off with an established number of Chinese visitors who are making repeat visits.
Alongside service, the building itself attracts Chinese guests. “Modernity is one of the most important aspects for the Chinese visitors when choosing a hotel, so the contemporary residential style interiors and 21st century amenities of Corinthia London are well received”, says Jenkins. “However, they also love the grand history of the building which dates back to 1885. Our Harrods gift shop is also very impressive for guests; it’s an iconic London attraction right in our Lobby”.
The hotel’s location is also popular with many tourist attractions within a ten minute walking distance from attractions such as Westminster Abby , Buckingham House, Trafalgar Square and the Royal Opera House. Its proximity to China Town is also appreciated by Chinese guests.
To continue to attract business, Ivy visits Asia twice a year to meet with Chinese companies, Travel Agencies and attends Luxury travel fairs.
Corporate and diplomatic Chinese travel is also an important market for Corinthia London. Alongside the personal touches and an understanding of the Chinese culture, the hotel offers security measures, function spaces, complimentary wifi and a fully serviced business centre.
