Diversey, a division of Sealed Air, recently awarded Michel Cottray, general manager of The Romanos Hotel Costa Navarino, a Westin Luxury Collection Resort in Greece, with its 2013 Sustainability Award. Diversey and the European Hotel Managers Association (EHMA) presented the award to Cottray at the closing ceremony of the EHMA annual general meeting in Milan on April 27.

“We are proud to honor Cottray and the Romanos Hotel for its holistic approach to improved sustainability,” said Vishal Sharma, Global VP Hospitality, Diversey. “Through the hotel’s unique method which combines a reduction in waste, energy and water with improved general environmental care, the program has set an impressive example for sustainability within the hospitality sector.”

Currently in its second year, the award, created by Diversey and the EHMA, recognizes leaders in the hospitality industry who demonstrate an exemplary dedication to improving environmental operations at hotels. To recognize the highest levels of environmental consciousness, the award honors the general manager who matches sustainability with bottom line accounting, security, risk management and corporate responsibility. Diversey and the EHMA believe that finding a perfect balance between sustainability and profit is critical to program success and top-level management buy-in.

The Romanos Hotel’s achievements includes environmental savings in all areas of the business through its use of eco-conscious suppliers, staff involvement and guest reduction in overall waste and water consumption.
“We hope this award inspires sustainability programs that not only reduce hotels’ carbon footprint, but improves their bottom line as well,” said Johanna Fragano, EHMA Treasurer and Managing Director of the Hotel Quirinale in Rome. “By understanding the People-Profit-Planet framework, hotels can significantly improve sustainability and operations in an impactful, responsible manner.”
