It features 48 new restaurants serving reasonably priced, high quality dishes
Before introducing the 2013 MICHELIN guide Belgium and Luxembourg on November 19 and the 2013 MICHELIN guide Netherlands on November 26, Michelin is today unveiling the selection of restaurants featured in the Bib Gourmand Benelux guide.
The restaurants chosen for the 2013 Bib Gourmand Benelux guide promote high-quality, inexpensive cuisine, which is especially important to today’s diners. All of the Bib Gourmand restaurants in the guide (indicated in the MICHELIN guide by a = pictogram) offer excellent value for money. Whether trendy restaurants or small bistros, featuring traditional or inventive cooking, and serving local or foreign food, all offer a three-course meal (starter, main dish and dessert) for no more than 35 euros(36 euros in large towns and cities).
Faithful to this indispensable rule, Michelin inspectors traveled widely in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands throughout the year in search of outstanding restaurants serving meals that are affordable even to people on tight budgets yet also respect the MICHELIN guide’s quality criteria with regard to ingredients, creativity and consistency. Leveraging their expert skills, the inspectors noted that chefs are fully engaged in deploying their creativity to offer customers superior meals at affordable prices. This year’s guide includes no fewer than 48 new restaurants. The selection also reveals a strong trend toward exotic cuisine, with more and more chefs seeking to make their mark in the Benelux countries by offering attractive, affordable menus served in a pleasant, contemporary atmosphere.
Overall, nearly 35% of the selection has been renewed in this fifth edition of the Bib Gourmand Benelux guide, which lists a total of 251 restaurants.
In Belgium, international cuisine is especially popular, with new restaurants like Maza’j in Auderghem, which serves traditional Lebanese dishes in a modern setting. Asian cooking is also widely featured this year, with Fong Mei in Antwerp, a restaurant serving typical Hong Kong-style Chinese dishes, and Kokuban, an affordable, attractive Japanese noodle bar in Brussels that is frequented by a highly diverse clientele. More traditional, the Brasserie de la Villa in Brussels is also listed in the guide. A spin-off of Villa Lorraine, it offers tasty, affordably priced dishes in a luxurious atmosphere. Formerly a starred restaurant, Au Gastronome in Paliseul is set in a charming location in the Ardennes region.
Now with a new management team and a promising young chef, it has enhanced its quality while maintaining its attractive prices. Beer lovers will definitely appreciate De Heeren van Liederkerke, which offers a range of creative dishes, some of which are made – and served – with beer.
In the Netherlands, the same trends are in evidence. Two Indonesian establishments – Tempo Doeloein Amsterdam and DjaDjan in Bergen – are excellent examples of restaurants where customers can choose from a full, varied selection of typical rice-based dishes that are served in a pleasant atmosphere and at a moderate price. La Storia in Neck is a traditional Italian trattoria that offers a wide array of pasta and pizzas. Other more classical, well-established restaurants are included, such as Hof van Herstal in Peij (Limbourg) and In den Rustwat in Kralingen. Both are located in magnificent buildings and offer a welcoming atmosphere as well as delicious dishes.
In Luxembourg, two new restaurants have been added to the selection: Two 6 Two (Strassen) and La Bergamote. Located in the heart of Luxembourg City, both feature a modern setting and very good value for money.
The 2013 Bib Gourmand Benelux guide will go on sale on November 8 for €15.95 in Belgium and the Netherlands and €15.50 in Luxembourg.
This fifth edition includes:
138 restaurants in Belgium (26 new)
8 restaurants in Luxembourg (2 new)
105 restaurants in the Netherlands (20 new)
