The rigorous Earthcheck process is based on a concept of continuous improvement. It requires great commitment from the staff at the Novotel Monte-Carlo Hotel.

The certification is granted after a preliminary evaluation of the hotel's performance and the use of an appropriate management system covering eight sectors:

- implementing a sustainable development policy;
- optimising water consumption;
- optimising energy consumption;
- waste management;
- paper consumption and paper recycling;
- use of pesticides;
- use of cleaning and hygiene products; and
- local community involvement.

To obtain the certification, a year of preparation and a ten-month evaluation period of the criteria are required. The certification is then granted by an independent auditor.

This long-term performance process is checked and reassessed every two years.

The Novotel Monte-Carlo and Sustainable Development

The Novotel Monte-Carlo contributes to the well-being of business and leisure travellers and is situated in the centre of Monte-Carlo. Since it opened in 2007, the Novotel Monte-Carlo has adopted a sustainable development approach in line with the Sovereign's deep commitment on behalf of the Principality through his "Prince Albert II" Foundation and business ethics, based on a community-spirited approach.

The hotel was able to obtain the certification thanks to the strong commitment and involvement of all the staff. This involvement is essential for the long-term sustainability of this policy.

Since the launch of the EarthCheck certification procedure, the Novotel Monte-Carlo has achieved some tangible and encouraging results:

· a reduction in electricity consumption of 7%
· economies in water consumption of 14%
· a reduction of gas consumption of 40%

and is implementing actions such as:

· installing low-energy lights for areas lit 24 hours a day
· installing water flow regulators on taps and showers
· sorting and recycling packaging, paper, cardboard, glass and light bulbs
· greater use of organic products and/or local products
