The Best Hotels in Europe, in Exotic Islands and Africa
The 9th annual ceremony for the Villegiature Awards were held in the salons of the Hilton Hotel Arc de Triomphe this Monday, 14th November 2011 in the presence of H.E. Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal, Ambassador of Malaysia to France and H.E. Francisco Seixas da Costa, Ambassador of Portugal to France.
Awards were made for the most beautiful hotels in Europe, in Africa and on exotic islands around the world, decided by a jury of twenty journalists and foreign correspondents representing not only the leading European media but also American, Chinese, Japanese and Australian.
In Europe : London, Milan, Venice, Rome, Paris and the Cote d’Azur, as well as the Turkish resort of Bodrum, have had their finest hotels honoured by awards. 2011 was a year where the candidates have excelled in creativity, innovation, renovation and inventiveness.
London, which will host the Olympic Games in 2012, sees two of its most beautiful luxury hotels winning awards:
- The Connaught for “welcome and service’” as well as its two bars, « The Coburg Bar » / Bar Manager Mark Jenner and « The Connaught Bar » / Bar Manager Frederic Tartas, both managed by the mixologist Agostino Perrone.
- The Baglioni Hotel London for the category “best bathroom”,
In Paris, two hotels:
- The Shangri-La hotel is selected in its first year of opening, for the interior design, created by Pierre-Yves Rochon.
- The Plaza Athénée, which opened 100 years ago, is awarded the highest prize, the Grand Prix of “Best Hotel in Europe”. Much credit must be given to the hotels two outstanding chefs, Alain Ducasse and Christophe Michalak. The Plaza Athénée is the only hotel to have won the Grand Prix twice since the creation of the Villegiature Awards in 2003.
On the Côte d’Azur, :
- Les Ateliers Apicius are awarded the prize of “Best interactive communication” for the site created for the Mas Candille in Mougins
- Le Grand-Hôtel Cap-Ferrat wins in the category of best Spa
- L’Hostellerie les Gorges de Pennafort is chosen for its restaurant, featuring the cuisine of Chef Philippe Da Silva,
- Le Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port wins the new category of “Best Hotel Breakfast” in the presence of Mr Robert Gaymer-Jones, CEO of Sofitel and Thierry Giraud who for more than ten years sets up a complete new strategy for Sofitel famous breakfasts.
It should also be noted, that also on the Riviera, the book written by Simone Duckstein « L’hôtel de la Ponche » in Saint Tropez, published by Editions Le Cherche midi, receives the prize of “Best Book Dedicated to Villegiature in Europe”
In Portugal :
- Le Douro 41, just outside Porto, is awarded the prize for Best Exterior Architecture created by João Pedro Serôdio.
In Italy :
- The Bulgari Hotel Milan wins for best atmosphere,
- The Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese is chosen for its splendid terrace looking out over the rooftops of the Eternal City,
- The Metropole Venice is awarded the prestigious Grand Prix “Best Charming Hotel in Europe”..
In Turkey :
- The Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay in Bodrum, is selected winner of the Grand Prix “Best Resort”.
In the category of exotic islands, it is Bon Ton Restaurant and Resort, located on Langkawi in Malaysia, which takes the Grand Prix ‘Best Island Hotel’.
In the new category ‘ Best Hotel in Africa’, created this year, Club Med Sinai Bay in Egypt takes the Grand Prix.
