Double Honours for the Royal Garden Hotel (United Kingdom)

Graham Bamford and Steve Munkley from the Royal Garden Hotel have been honoured for their contribution to the hospitality industry at the University of West London’s (the new name for Thames Valley University) annual London School of Hospitality and Tourism’s prize-giving. Held at the Syon Park Hotel the duo were amongst a host of industry professionals and students to be singled out for their achievements.

Recognised for his long standing career as one of the sector’s most respected general managers, Graham Bamford became an Honorary Doctor, while executive chef Steve Munkley, a former student at the university, was honoured as a Professor.

Already an honouree life member of Le Clefs D’Or and former chairman of the Master Innholders, Graham Bamford has managed hotels in London, Singapore and Indonesia since beginning his career in 1968. Executive chef Steve Munkley continues to offer his support to the university as a mentor, providing work experience opportunities for the students, as well as being a patron and advisor to the university.

Head of School, Professor David Foskett MBE CMA said: “Both Graham and Steve are outstanding professionals and icons who have given so much to the industry. Graham Bamford is highly regarded as one of the outstanding general managers of five star properties in the world, he’s a great businessman who understands clients’ needs and is passionate about hospitality. His track record in management and his ability is exceptional. Steve Munkley has worked with us for so many years and is a real role model for students. He imparts a great deal of knowledge, is extremely passionate about what he does and has encouraged so many young people to achieve.”

Graham Bamford, general manager, Royal Garden Hotel commented on his success: “To be recognised by my peers is very flattering. I have been lucky to work in some amazing places and properties and this is a magnificent personal achievement.”

Steve Munkley, executive chef, Royal Garden Hotel said of his Professorship: “I’ve had a long affiliation with the university dating back to being a student. It has been a pleasure and honour to work so closely with the students and staff there since graduating. The school has played a large part in my own professional development and career, so to be honoured by them is very special.”
