The Newport Marriott has been certified by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in the "R.I. Hospitality Green Certification Program," it was announced today by Walter Andrews, General Manager.
Some of the environmentally friendly practices and policies that the Newport Marriott Hotel has introduced are:
* Replaced light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs
* Installed low-flow showerheads and toilets
* Introduced water/energy saving linen program
* Utilizes ECOLAB "Aqua Balance Pure Comfort Mineral Pool and Spa System"
* Uses 100% recycled note pads and pens made from recycled materials for meetings
* Offers eco-friendly water service
* Engages in meeting room recycling
* Uses on-line event menus versus paper menus
* Utilizes organic flowers upon request
* Offers a recyclable box lunch program
* Employs paperless billing
* Offers Yummy Earth Organic Candy for meeting participants
Receiving this certification is just one step in the Newport Marriott's commitment to preserve the environment and give back to the community. The hotel is also a participant in Marriott International's "Spirit to Preserve The Rain Forest" promotion whereby the hotel will make a cash contribution in the name of each eligible group that books a meeting at the Newport Marriott to the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation to protect the Juma Reserve in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. The donation will equal 5% of the total cost of a group's guest rooms. The Newport Marriott has also donated large sums of money to the Children's Miracle Network and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport. Additionally, the Holiday Gingerbread House which was on display during November and December raised money and food supplies for the homeless.
The hotel has also recently become a member of Farm Fresh RI, an organization which promotes the consumption of locally and honestly produced foods.
